I wasn't a fan of TNC. I thought it was utterly ridiculous at points. It introduces plot points then does very little with them also. The first game felt way more grounded.

Never heard anyone say Control was unfair. It can be a bit difficult as times, but not that bad.

Had a few issues with it in the gameplay department and like most 3D games collision felt wonky at times, but this was really great otherwise. I often get irritated by narrative heavy games like this but what they did here was really something; I'm impressed at how well they managed to write a man who used to basically be a floating gun. Game was hard as strawberry float especially for me since I blow dick at FPS's, but I like a challenge.

Perhaps it is my childhood indoctrination during my America years speaking, but Blaskowitz reading out The New Colussus in his internal monologue as he lay there dying was a wonderful way to end this game.

I'll play the DLC at some point, and perhaps the sequel too at a later point, but I've had my fill of this for a while.

As an ode to American exceptionalism and WWII-era grit, I find BJ Blaskowitz and the rebooted Wolfenstein series to be absolutely top tier. The New Colossus itself seems a bit gooseberry fool, but my God The New Order was a top tier game.

And I say that as someone who generally avoids WWII FPS games like the plague.

Yeah machinegames found the best way to reboot that kind of franchise. It's good that it takes itself so seriously and that Blaskowitz just generally feels so tired and melancholic; it doesn't celebrate what it comes from but instead takes a much more pessimistic view of what it is, while not dismissing the core of said ideas. Hence the effectiveness of the poem at the end; the idealism of the American dream.

I will admit that DOOM 2016 is probably the superior ID reboot gameplay wise though.

Pony Island - 8/10

I knew nothing about this going into it, and that's probably the best way you could experience it. I thought it was pretty clever. Seeing as it cost over a quid, I was well pleased with it.

For the first time ever I've got all trophies in a game and earned the platinum trophy. Dragon Ball Z Kakarot was the game and it was great fun. I have just been playing normally but saw I had only two trophies left and they were easy to get.

I'd give the game a solid 8/10

Excellent value for money and the dlc ups the level cap and adds more to do. Beautiful and bright game with fun combat and the flying around just feels so natural. Loads fast, easy to follow and grinding to level 300 was enjoyable.

Hope the final part of the dlc is announced soon.

Wish my image sig would work

Yeah I agree about Doom, that and Eternal have probably the most satisfying core gameplay loops I've ever seen in FPS games. Utterly phenomenal. I don't think that lessens how good the first Wolfenstein was though, if anything I would say that had a superior atmosphere and story to Doom, which is pretty standard stuff.

Yeah they have different strengths but both franchise revivals have been very impressive.

The core gameplay loop in Doom Eternal is genuinely exceptional so it's hard for either Wolfenstein game to compete with that in terms of the immediate "feel" of the experience. I do like the more mechanical brutality to Wolfenstein's gameplay though, there's a real crunch to everything which is very satisfying when they get it right.

After about the fifth time an enemy spawned immediately behind me and killed me as a result, yeah, it was beginning to feel unfair. So much of the game was fantastic but it was like Remedy went out of their way to make sure I didn't enjoy it. :(

Haven't played Eternal yet, still sitting on my shelf. Gonna have a break from FPS games for a bit.

I agree with TNO having superior story, but I appreciate that Doom leaves much of its story telling to logs to you can both search for and read at your own pace. Cut scenes generally aren't too intrusive in TNO but there were parts where I felt like they were too frequent or too long for my taste, plus I'm still kind of split about the camera perspective being taken away from the first person in a lot of scenes.

Doom nails its atmosphere and only really fails in terms of environmental diversity, so I'd say this comes down a matter of taste.

TNO has two issues with gameplay that I think are worth highlighting. These are reloading and movement speed. Blasko is fragile, which would be fine, but he's also not fast enough to consistently dodge gunfire, and the need to reload further slows him down because you can't juggle hitstun between enemies as easily to keep on the move. At least for my playthrough, this forced me to rely on cover more. Again that wouldn't necessarily be an issue but TNO doesn't quite seem like that kind of game, and imo would have benefitted from a slightly more arena shooter style of movement. Then again this makes the stealth more important, which I don't mind, but your options were pretty limited in this respect too.

You are very vulnerable in Wolfenstein, which definitely take a while to get used to. I really like the concept of taking out the commanders stealthily to prevent backup being called during fights though, it added a nice bit of variety and tactical play to things. The stealth is quite well done in general, which is a nice nod to the franchise roots, but I appreciate that not everyone is a fan of sneaky gameplay and would rather just shoot gooseberry fool up!

The two major issues I had with TNO/TNC were having to press a key to pickup stuff, this just felt infuriating at times and I really don't think it added anything tangible to the experience. And the poor signposting/directions on where to go next at times - there were just a few too many moments when I was wandering around thinking "okay, where exactly do you want me to go now?"

The commander stuff was actually a pretty good addition, but the whole stealth thing could have used more expansion considering how much the levels are designed around it. A few gadgets or something, a way to distract enemies, that kind of thing.

The manual item pick up was indeed pointless and made me miss gooseberry fool during firefights. Signposting was also poor in places partially because the graphical design was a bit lacking in the clarity department.

Did anyone play the first game’s DLC that you could buy separate, I think it even came out on disc, something about zombies? Now that’s how you do DLC.
EDIT - The Old Blood.

I picked up The Old Blood for a few quid years ago but have still not got round to playing it. I've heard good things about it though, I hear it's kind of a re-imagining of Return to Castle Wolfenstein which is a game I loved back in the day!

Vampire The Masquerade: Coteries of New York

I thought this was an excellent "choose your own adventure" style visual novel. It really captured the atmosphere of the World of Darkness and its Kindred politics and would serve as a great introduction to anyone unfamiliar with the universe.

I'll definitely be playing it again as one of the other characters but first I'll be diving straight into the sequel. Really pleasant surprise of a game, this one.

Vampire The Masquerade: Shadows of New York

This one was definitely more of a linear experience than the first but I feel that allowed the dev to tell a tighter story. The premise is your basic locked room murder mystery and your character ends up being the unfortunate sap tasked with solving the case.

Unfortunately there are no actual investigation mechanics at work here as the only freedom you have is in your dialogue choices but I still really enjoyed it and loved existing in the World of Darkness, surrounded by a plentiful cast of backstabbing, untrustworthy characters.

There were also some really cool moments in the story for fans of the old lore.

And it was weird seeing the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic taking place in-game. It felt really surreal, like the kind of thing that seemed like a game mechanic, not something you could imagine happening in real life.

Oh and I haven't even mentioned the artwork or the soundtrack which were both excellent.

Paradise Killer (Switch).

I really liked this, but i'm not conviced its a great game. What is fantastic is the sound track and the visual style - it really feels like nothing else and has some of the best musical hooks since Phoenix Wright.

Speaking of PW, its fair to say this game has similarities with it. Paradise Killer is an open world detective game with a trial (consisting of several crimes) at the end. This works well at times, but at other times it can feel a touch confusing, where you are just stumbling across seemingly random bits of evidence. It all came together nicely in the end though.

World traversal is terrible, it can be very difficult to negotiate the landscape (even with certain upgrades), and there is a punitivie fee for using the fast travel system which always leaves you concerned you are going to be short of currency (dont worry too much, you probably wont).

It felt a lot like Deadly Premonition in the way it could polarise opinion, and although i did not love it as much as that game, i came away from it after about 15 hours feeling like i had a really fresh, unique experience with a bunch of crazy bastards. And thats all i really want from any game.

DmC: Devil May Cry - 8/10

+ Looks really good - one of the best-looking 360 games I think I've played.
+ Very good level design, both in creativity and execution.
+ Combat is generally enjoyable.
+ Doesn't outstay its welcome.

- Sometimes the controls are a bit awkward, especially with regards to jumping.
- The combat and waves of enemies can get a bit tedious.
- Probably too many abilities, weapons, and moves for my liking, as most of them aren't needed or are that interesting/fun.

The main game was for the most part excellent, moving at a decent pace, with a fairly good plot (for a Devil May Cry game) and - crucially - enjoyable and satisfying combat.
Vergil's Downfall was okay, but fairly forgettable I think. Just as it started to get enjoyable thanks to unlocking moves and weapons that finally made the combat fun (compared to Dante), it was all over. I didn't like the cut scenes particularly, and the plot was...well, they tried to have one I guess.

I'm not interesting in playing any of this again for unlockables or just for the fun of it, but I had a good time with the 10-11 or so hours it took me to complete.

The Last of Us 2

It broke me all over again  I feel exhausted now.

I think the first is a better game but the second is a better experience.

The Last Guardian.

For all its slippery control quirks I loved the experience overall and came away feeling all the better for it. And on an even more personal note, Trico will (and deservedly so) go down as one of gamings best and most memorable gaming companions.

Please give this game a chance if you've been on the fence.

The Swapper - 8/10

This is a real sleeper hit. I just wish there was more of it.
