Because we all love tearing into other people's lists...

Inspired by the Readers Top Fives from N64 / NGC Magazines of olde, share your own personal lists of five here. The format can be anything you like.

Of course, feel free to use others' lists as inspiration for you own (you can copy the format wholesale with your own selections) and to critique people's choices at length.

These will all, I expect, be extremely subjective, giving us plenty of opportunity for shaming healthy discussion.

I'll get us started.

Top 5 Game Music (original music)
Animal Crossing (GC)
Banjo-Kazooie (N64)
Fable 2 (360)
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The Sims: Hot Date (PC)

Top 5 Game Soundtracks
1080 Avalanche (GC)
Burnout 3: Takedown (multi)
FIFA 2003 (multi)
Jet Set Radio Future (XB)
SSX3 (multi)

Now you!

Mine would exactly overlap there. Give me specifically composed music over normal music that just happens to be in a game any day!

Top Five Gaming Soundtracks:

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U)
Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
Bravely Default (3DS)
Banjo-Kazooie (N64)
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Switch)

Ocarina of Time gets nowhere near that list what are you on about.

Top Five Noses in Gaming:

Probopass
Yoshi
Diglett
Olimar
Waluigi

Ultimate's soundtrack kinda feels like cheating ;)

I know this'll be a personal taste thing, but it really does depend on the game. Something like Tony Hawks or SSX - those soundtracks are curated to capture their sport's subculture and are such a large part of the game. Then you have rhythm games which kind of feel like cheating but you can easily imagine Guitar Hero being praised for its available songs.

Ban request

But also, depends if we're talking best music in isolation that you'd listen to on its own, or best music as an element of the game. If it's the latter Ocarina is hands down the winner for me, but it is so tied up to playing the game with its leitmotifs and story beats (and the sound design in general).

It probably doesn't help that I don't play sports games that don't have Mario in much if at all. Rhythm games are definitely cheating is Smash is :P but also, I haven't played a rhythm game with a better soundtrack than Xenoblade 2.

I do listen to a great deal of 'soundtracks separate from their games', but I think those five I mentioned do a great job at marrying soundtracks with the game (Smash a possible exception). There are games whose soundtracks I like a lot more in situ than on their own (BotW and NEO TWEWY both apply), but even in situ I prefer the soundtracks I named. Obviously none of those actually use music as a gameplay element, which is where Ocarina has an edge.

Is "Ocarina of Time has some of gaming's greatest music" really such a controversial opinion that it deserves to be memed?

Genuinely think Mario World has been far surpassed by other 2D platformers. Meanwhile Wario Land 4 just creeped me out. What was going on with those CDs!?

this is the 'pile on Dan thread' right

Celeste (various)
Kirby's Epic Yarn (Wii)
Henry Hatsworth and the Puzzling Adventure (DS) (yes you read that right)
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES)
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U)

Rayman Legends might have been in with a shout if UbiSoft weren't awful.

I'll bite on the Top 5 Party Games too:

Jackbox Party Pack 7 (but honestly a bunch of them could go here)
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Overcooked 2
Towerfall
Wii Sports Resort

Smash is often too complex for a party audience, I've found.
