Ironhide, are these the only five such games you have played? Or are there others that didn't make the cut?

I've played loads of JRPGs, that was basically the first five that came to mind.

Another five would be

Tactics Ogre
Golden Sun
Disgaea 5
Lost Odyssey
Final Fantasy IX

Why Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon and not Legend of the Mystical Ninja on SNES?

Well, that's just the way people have chosen to approach the thread thus far. There's nothing stopping any discourse, but so far folk have seemed keener to share their own lists than critique those of others.

It's funny* because it's true!

Balladeer, I read into this that your view (Paper Mario series aside) is that for the major Nintendo franchises, the most recent game is the best. Is that consistent with your views in general?

Mario Golf: World Tour (3DS)
Smash Bros Melee (or Ultimate, haven't played much of that one yet)
Mario Party (the one on Wii)

This list is subject to change, depending on my mood.

Zeruda, was the Wii Mario Party the first one you played?

Chris, nothing by Rare makes your list, did you mean "painfully British" as littered with British-isms, or is it more of the feel / setting of the game?

2. The first time a Crimson Head stood up in the REmake.
3. Pretty much any jumpscare in FNaF
4. When I thought Eternal Darkness was erasing my memory card
5. The Legend of Zelda; The Ocarina of Time

Skarjo, when you played REmake had you previously played RE, or was it new to you? If it wasn't new, are you saying the Crimson Head was so terrifying, it frightened you all over again even though you knew to expect it?

Feel/setting.

Rare are obviously made the most British in isms games.

I have to admit Mario Party is a line of games I have somewhat neglected over the years. Partly due to the weird way I wouldn't buy anything that didn't get the N64/NGC/N-Gamer Star Game award and MP rarely seemed to quite make the cut :slol: :fp: I still maintain that the Wii MP has some quality board design though.

Mario's first two Parties were given Star Game awards. 3 narrowly missed out despite it being the best in the series.

Me too, I think it was because as youngsters we had a very finite amount of cash to spend on games and wanted to make sure we got a good one.

I don't think so, but newer games do have an inherent advantage, don't they? If a hypothetical company makes the same game in two eras using the tech available to them, the second one will be better. So, Smash has an advantage because it's a game that benefits from fanservice and, generally, the more the merrier.

With a lot of my top games though, it's more about approach. I like exploration, and while more recent tech allows for bigger worlds, that's not the end of the story. Take Mario Odyssey, for example. It follows the template of my favourite game for a long while, SM64. The most recent 3D Mario before that was 3D World, a very linear game that's closer to 2D Marios in style - and before that (and 3D Land), the Galaxies. Nintendo didn't choose that approach based on tech., and I was less keen on those games. Similar for Zeldas: before BotW my favourite was Twilight Princess, not Skyward Sword.

And of course you're missing out several other series. My fave Metroid game is Prime 1; my fave Star Fox is Lylat Wars; my fave Yoshi is Yoshi's Island. If Nintendo made a Metroid Prime game like Prime 1 in basically every regard, but new, and using this gen's tech, that would probably be my favourite. But they haven't so it isn't.

I remember there being a game I was interested in that got like 80-84%, thereby narrowly missing out on a Star Game award and I immediately shunned any notion of being interested in it.

The best neighbours period was Karl having an affair while his family were addicted to magic carpet on the pc.

But the best Smash Bros game is Melee.

The ones that followed featured too many characters (most of which were unwelcome) and had the final smash crap.

So I was brand new fresh and being a Ninty kid it was basically my first real experience of horror gaming. I also thought the Crimson Heads were new for the remake right? Were they in the original? I thought the whole point of CH’s were that they were dependent on the GC’s memory to make it work?

Anyway, they were new to me and I remember them so vividly because my dad had basically walked in to ask me ‘Are ya winning son?’ when then first one stood up and it might be the first time I’ve sworn that badly in his presence.
