One of my favourite games ever is Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance on the GC/PS2

Can anyone recommend something similar, i.e. a real time action leveling up RPG (with swords, and magic stuff) , which can be played co-op?

Available Consoles, Switch, PS4, Wii, XBOX 360 + some retro.

I guess the obvious ones would be Diablo 3 and Torchlight but I find the relentless loot grind to be too much. There isn't enough difference between sword A and sword B, it's all too incremental. Best option (without it being fantasy) is probably Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3.

I loved Dark Alliance, it was a simple idea but really nicely executed and was really fun to play in co-op.

It looked really nice as well for the time, very smooth and refined visuals.

The 60fps of 1 appeals, but I'm guessing 2 might be overall the better package?

But free-falling platforming swooping action sounds right up my street.

Knowing you enjoy movement-feel and exploring game spaces I think you'd enjoy either. 2 is more developed and while it still has problems with combat - probably the series' main criticism - they are less pronounced than the first game. 2 also has more variety in core traversal as you can switch between gravity styles and it is fun experimenting between being heavy and full of momentum or light and floaty, and it also has more location variety. 2 is actually more like 2+3 with three separate and sequential story arcs, so it's also definitely got the more content, but one of those arcs is concerned with returning to the city from the first game - I think that's better obviously having the context from playing the first game first! In fact I really like the story and characters so I would recommend playing the games in order, but it depends how much that matters to you (the story gets on to Kingdom Hearts level of obtuse anyway so I don't think you'd be spoiling it by playing 2 first, you'd just be even more lost on certain aspects of it but that's normal!)

2 had online elements that unfortunately got shut down only a year or so after launch. They weren't integral to the game, but they were ever present treasure-hunts placed across the map by other players taking photos of locations for you to find and it's a shame they are gone (there are also a few costumes locked behind it now forever lost but oh well - I didn't get them all anyway because it was quite a grind!).

The music in both games is fantastic. Visually both have strong styles and art direction, but obviously 2 being made for PS4 vs Vita means it is the prettier game. 2 is a very pretty game!

Brilliant and thorough OR!

I think I may try 1 to go in order then. Either way you've sold me on trying the series :)

I picked up the second one for the PS2 vaguely recently, though when we sat down to play it we discovered one the PS2 controllers no longer worked (shame it wasn't also on the GC). Hopefully it stacks up to the original.

Only managed to defeat Gauntlet mode in 2019. Must say the Orb boss fight, and running around in circles is a classic.

Maybe a different kind of game, but the original Baldur’s Gate (and its sequel) is on the PS4 as well.

This might be slightly left field, but have you tried Secret of Mana? It’s different to Baldur’s Gate, but fits your criteria above to a tee. Available on Switch as part of the Collection of Mana.

Thanks All, I think I shall try Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. Can anyone recommend where I might be able to get hold of a copy? I've looked on Amazon, Argos, Game, Nintendo online and it's out of stock everywhere. Not sure where kids buy games from these days.

I'm really surprised by how difficult it is to find MUA3, was there some kind of time limit on the licensing? Anyway, £45 on ebay seems the best I can find but there is supposedly only 1 left.

EDIT: Or I guess you can still get it digital on the Switch store?

That's probably an example of how closely Nintendo manage supply

Unbelievably hyped. Will have to buy a Switch this evening (the Switch mentioned in my original post was my sisters who I wanted to play a co op game with, but to play BD I'll buy my own).

Edit: My sister did not think this news was worth a phone call.

3 of our are meeting up and will have a couple of hours with a PS4. Can anyone recommend a game we can download from the PS4 for 3 players?

Something we could get into quickly.consodering the time the time would he good, but I wouldn't say no to a 100 hour long 3 player co op RPG.

Helldivers - A really good co-op twin stick shooter which is more than a little Starship Troopers

Towerfall Ascension - Fast paced twitchy platforming combat, one of my favourite all-time competitive games

Overcooked 1+2 / Moving Out - Different devs but very similar hectic co-op multitasking

Rocket League - Take the splitscreen online in 3v3

Spelunky 1+2 - Platforming roguelites that're great fun in co-op and have a good competitive mode thrown in too

Screencheat - Splitscreen FPS where everyone is invisible - you have to literally look at each other's screen to work out where to shoot

Thanks, I have a copy of Helldivers so must remember to bring that next time. Towerfall Ascension sounds good (and we all found the idea of Screencheat very interesting)

I have it on Switch and yeah it's great fun with a couple of friends. All of the maps are sectioned into different colours so at a glance you can tell which area everyone is in, which works really well, and it has a good variety of weapons and game modes - more classic FPS than modern. The only downside is that you have to unlock pretty much everything (weapons, maps and game modes) by playing so you can't just just straight in to whatever. If you're all learning the game though a constant drip of weapons and maps isn't a bad thing.
