Can confirm it's amazing. And it's been supported by the dev to a ridiculous degree. Well worth checking out.

Is that a Metroidvania? I thought it was a roguelike. :?

It's a little of both really like there's a procedurally generated map and permadeath but you also unlock permanent upgrades that allow you to explore areas you couldn't previously reach. It definitely leans more toward being a rouguelike however.

Bloodstained on PS4 is the sequel to SOTN we never got. Wonderful and so replayable too.

Dead Cells while a rogue like is also close to a metroidvania and the music and style of it are very metroidvania.

I hate rogue likes but dead cells is a different level of gaming. It's also cheap at the moment on PS4.

The mummy game on switch is supposed to be great, looks like the old Aliens metroidvania game and I think it's cheap too.

Wish my image sig would work

Dead Cells is a rogue-lite, by the way. And yes, it definitely has Metroidvania elements.

edit: Huge +1 for Guacamelee. Not played 2 but the first one was superb. Asked me to do the near impossible on Vita and so had to complete it on PS4. (The only game where I had to mime the actions I was about to perform before attempting them for the umpteenth time :slol: )

I've never got into Dead Cells. Tried on several occasions over the last 2 years or so. I think it was 2 years ago I got it on Steam Early access.

Oh I love me some Dead Cells, fantastic game! But it doesn't quite scratch the right itch for me.

Think I'll give Bloodstained a shot and maybe Ori as well. Thanks for the suggestion folks, they've all gone down on my watchlist for the future!

I’m just playing through Guacamelee on Wii U at the moment, and it gets the thumbs up from me too. Mercifully, it had just about the right level of challenge.

Since buying my Switch, I've become a huge Metroidvania fan. Here's my rankings of every Metroidvania game I've completed on the Switch. Even the lowest ones are still very good:

1. Hollow Knight
2. Guacamelee 2
3. Guacamelee
4. Ori and the Blind Forest
5. SteamWorld Dig 2
6. Shantae and the Pirate's Curse
7. Axiom Verge
8. Yoku's Island Express
9. Gato Roboto

Also shout outs to Dead Cells, Bloodstained Curse of the Moon and The Messenger, which can scratch your 2D action platformer itch.

I personally did not get on with Owlboy at all. Thought it was clumsy, slow and dull.

If you want to venture off the platform, Bloodstained Ritual of the Night (PS4) and Metroid Samus Returns (3DS) are both solid.

Support behind Samus Returns. Very good combat and fun exploration; a tad soulless apart from where it wasn’t.

Baby Metroid attack!

Yeah a solid, but mostly forgettable effort. The repetition of the bosses and slightly more guided, linear nature stop it from being top tier. Dat final boss fight tho.

I heard Timespinner is a good game and I believ it is a Metroivania. Just literally starting it will report back.

1+ for Headlander. It's well worth a playthrough, really enjoyed it! Bit short (got 100% in seven hours) but it was fun.

Guacamelee games are great.

I can vouch for Dead Cells. I had a great time with it. It's a roguelike but it's forgiving.

Can't believe the lack of Hollow Knight in here.

Might be a silly question but have you actually completed Super Metroid as you have it available on the Switch?

I enjoyed this, also.

Played 5 hours of Timespinner. Really enjoying it. It's very good.

I own it, haven't played it yet. Hopefully get around to it in the next few months.

Forgot these too! Gato has some tough bosses, Steamworld Dog 2 improves as it goes with quality of life powers so I found the mid-game best balanced.

And yes obviously only missing Hollow Knight because Jen said he's already played it!

Metroid Prime.

Check out my YouTube channel!
