Yeah Hollow Knight was great, challenging but enjoyable - a bit sprawling and whilst the lack of direction and railroading the player down a set path was nice most of the time it did get annoying on occasion.

I've played a bunch of SteamWorld Dig 1 and found it pretty enjoyable but I wouldn't have quite put it in the Metroidvania category - does the sequel improve enough that I should go back to it?

I can't remember what it's called but there was a decent one on xbox a few years back that had a pseudo type of 3d going on in it. You were just a normal guy who then breaks into a base to rescue his missus and gets a power suit along the way.

Edit - Shadow Complex

Sequel is significantly improved. It has hand-designed levels rather than procgen of the original

100% the above. Agree the first is not a Metroidvania, whereas 2 absolutely is.

Excellent - I think I've got 2 on PC via Twitch Prime as well so I should be able to get straight on that one.

Worth me going back and finishing the first Dig beforehand?

Nah, don't bother. It may help if you remember who Rusty (protagonist of 1) is, but the plot is entirely independent.

 It is easily the best Metroidvania on Switch, I’ll give you that.

Not played Gato Roboto, but SteamWorld and SteamWorld Dig 2 are great.

Alundra is great but more like an early Zelda and the new star wars game is worth the money.

Rapidly-greying is Mediocre to Average at games :fp:

I'm being pedantic here but Alundra is more like Lansdstalker on Mega Drive than Zelda. It's usually considered as a spiritual successor to Landstalker since many of the staff that worked on that game worked on Alundra too.

Yoku's Island Express, there's nothing else quite like it.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, was nice to find a metroidvania style game that I could physically manage to play (after some clever improvisation) having all but abandoned the genre a few years ago.

There's also Toki Tori 2 in the 'not quite a metroidvania' category but I don't think it's to most peoples tastes as it is rather simplistic (think its more aimed at younger kids).

Not played either, but, looking at them with my untrained brain, Alundra does look more Zelda than Landstalker just going by the top down view instead of isometric.

Played Steamworld Dig 2 at the start of the year and I really enjoyed it. It's easily better than the original.

A good handful of the games discussed in here have just gone on sale on the Switch. Interestingly, Blaster Master Zero (both 1 and 2) have dropped for the first time ever. I plan to pick up 2 because it is the better reviewed one.

The sequel should absolutely have been called Blaster Master One

I played Zero and my biggest gripe was how it snowballs into triviality. Not taking damage means upgrading your gun, which makes it easier to not take damage, which upgrades your gun more... and so on, until you max out and can waltz through the levels and boss fights that are objectively way more challenging if you are worse at the game. It's very backwards. No idea if the sequel is similar.

But wouldn't that be confusing considering there is the original 1988 Blaster Master which would be considered "One"?

I guess Microsoft got away with it when releasing the XBOX One so it might work!

Blaster Master Zero and Zero 2 are aces. Very good games. BMZ2 follows on directly from the end of BMZ.

Finished Timespinner last night. Really enjoyed it. I put in 9 hours to get, what I assume, is the best ending, but I think I got the first around 7 hours. It's pretty short, but, it's damn good.

BMZ2 is imo, more difficult than BMZ. The top down sections are harder to upgrade your gun.

TBF, it is a remake of the NES game, but I believe it takes story bits from the Western, Japanese and comics, not just from one version.
