Im currently bored to pieces with action adventure games after replaying Okami, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess and need a decent RPG to see me through the summer, or at least until a VC release of FFIII/VI.

Ive been looking at Sakura Wars, Sky Crawlers, Rune Factory or Fragile Dreams and wondering which was best.
Im not afraid of random battles nor nerdy stat tracking but a compulsive plot is mandatory and id really like the option of GameCube controls.

Advice?

Sky Crawlers isn't an RPG so you can cut that off the list. Rune Factory is probably the best on that list but it isn't strong plot wise and I'm unsure if it uses a GC pad.

I recommend Tales Of Symphonia 2 if you played the first, great sequel even if it does cull the world map.

The virtual console has some decent RPG's like Final Fantasy, Mario RPG, Paper Mario, Orge Battles, Breath Of Fire. A whole bunch of decent retro games you've probably played.

Final Fantasy 7. Replaying it myself atm and it's still as good as ever. Also serves to remind me just how much of a colossal shit-fest FFXIII is.

Fragile is pretty good, what little I've played of it. A little clunky, perhaps, but with a compelling atmosphere.

If you're willing to go SRPG, Shining Force 1 and 2 are awesome Mega Drive classics that hold up very well :)

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn is doing it for me at the moment, although it's an SRPG.

It definitely has the option of using the GC controller. I wouldn't necessarily say the story was enthralling, but it does the job. It's quite challenging too, especially if you accidentally start in hard mode while drunk, as I did :fp:

Sakura Wars is part visual novel, part turn-based mech-fight role-player. Sky Crawlers is not an RPG at all. Rune Factory is Harvest Moon with monsters and Fragile Dreams is not really an RPG, more a post-apocalyptic tone poem with crap combat and beautiful music.

Of the four, Rune Factory's the best if you can cope with all the farming, and it's strawberry floating massive so it will keep you going for a bit. That said, if the thought of flirting with hot anime chicks and tapping through tons of dialogue doesn't turn you off, I think I've still got my copy of Sakura Wars I could perhaps loan you for a bit.

If you've never played it before (which seems unlikely) then Paper Mario would seem to fit best, or I suppose Super Mario RPG.

I presume you've played Thousand Year Door.

EDIT - Problem solved it seems.

Thinking about Wii RPGs for the summer...Arc Rise Fantasia should be coming out in America sometime soon, right? Does it have a domestic release-date yet?

Have you thought of getting Skies or Arcadia? I know it's a GC game but it's sill probably the best traditional RPG you'll play on a Wii.

Rune Factory, Muramasa or Opoona. Or download Ys I and II from Turbogrx on Virtual Console.

Opoona might well be the best traditional RPG on Wii, y'know.

Reminds me, that's yet another Wii game with awesome music. Tons of the buggers.

Got my son into JRPGs with that one. He now plays the Final Fantasy games on PSP.

Opoona really? It got a couple of good reviews amass a load of bad to average ones. I have it and put about 7 hours into it and all I see is a ugly looking game with a terrible camera, poor story and rubbish combat pushed down by lots and lots of mundane tasks.

1. It's not ugly.
2. Admittedly, you've got a point with the camera.
3. The story's not brilliant, but the characters are great and the dialogue's well-written. And the jobs system is really cool.
4. The combat's awesome, you daftie! Flexible and fun. Requires a bit of thought and skill.
