I was in HMV the other day and thought it might be fun to start a small collection of vinyl albums, however I've not had a record player since the 80's and was wondering if anyone here has such a set up in this modern age of digital downloads and could offer some advice. Where best to buy, what type of player would best suit my needs, accessories, that sort of thing.

I don't have a huge budget, but can be flexible to a degree.

I don't have any real advice to offer but I have a friend who is very much into this stuff so I will see if I can get any useful info out of them!

I have a small vinyl collection and a record player in my living room - it’s great for atmosphere and the collection looks lovely. The player itself was a cheap one, looks a little bit ‘80s in a bad way and I think it was bought off Amazon for about £30. I’ll see if I can find a link later on.

This is exactly what happened with my daughter, we were wandering around HMV and she was just enthralled by the idea of vinyl. She ended up buying (via me) this one from Amazon

It seems ok though the speakers aren't that great (but it does have rca output so you could send it to an amp). There seems to be an absolute stack of similar looking ones available. If you wanted something a bit more audiophile then I'd imagine Richer Sounds would be your first port of call.

I was tempted too, but had to ask myself in the end one question - Why? Once the novely has worn off it will be something that just takes up space and the sound won't be as rich as on a CD.

I do agree with the fun bit though. As a kid I played the LP of Queen's Sheer Heart Attack more or less constantly. It's a more interactive experience certainly, but we have moved on.

Put half of your budget into the cartridge/stylus/needle as that's the part that actually "plays" the record and is merely amplified by the rest. Besides a deck you need a phono amp and an amplifier/speakers or some active (built in amp) speakers.

That audio technica set up probably already has a half decent one as a turnkey solution.

I have a Pioneer deck that needs a new belt and cartridge, and Kenwood direct drive turntable stacked on top of each other, unused. Thinking about getting rid of them. Gets expensive though. I actually plug mine directly into a pro audio setup but should get a proper phono amp to sort out wow and flutter (yes this is a real thing). I also own a grand total of about 3 records so there isn't much point having them around. I got them for art experiments and one is a hand-me-down. I agree it is something that kind of just piles up unless you really get into it and are willing to invest in the collection, then it's great.
