Or, as a variation, I realise I'm in a dream but whenever I "wake up" I realise I'm still dreaming again. They always leave me feeling worse than a normal bad dream where you just wake up the first time.

Did you see any Nightmare on Elm Street movies as a kid? It happens at least twice in that franchise.

Sounds like the beginning of a Lovecraftian tale to me. Do you sometimes hear strange chanting in the night and catch glimpses of robed figures moving through the house?
The best one was I found an entire house in my house and rented it out making a killing.
- I get quite a few "body horror" ones where things end up under or make holes in my skin. Really trypophobia-like stuff.
- I have a lot where I find that running on my hands is the quickest way to get around. Full-on handstand with legs-over-the-head action. (oh hey no context) Way quicker than regular running.
- Trying to play a gig but every time I get back to my drums, something from my kit is missing. Usually ends with the show being over by the time I've got everything together.
- I used to get the "waking up but still dreaming" ones a lot but less so these days. Apart from ones that then turn into night terrors, as I've posted about in the other thread. Fortunately not had them for a few months now after a lengthy string of bad ones.

Never seen any of the Nightmare on Elm Street films so it's definitely not from that.
I do definitely have some 'metal' dreams though, mostly I'm seeing those kind of dreams in the third person, had an awesome one the other week about scantily clad women shooting demons with various sci-fi weapons
Oh I just remembered I sometimes have dreams where I'm pissing or shitting and just can't finish. The toilet will also be really uncomfortable, for example too high, low, too close, really dirty, etc. And I just won't be able to finish my business.

Those are normally signs you need to wake up and go for real. I've had ones where the cubicles have all been occupied, have no actual loo in them, the loo is in the middle of a stage in a packed theatre etc. I've normally woken up soon after with a mighty need to go irl.
I've had one recurring theme the last couple of years. The setting changes each time, but the order of events is pretty much the same:
Wandering about a random place on my own, then I'm with family, then I'm alone again, searching and exploring an increasingly foreboding location. I wake up right before it becomes a proper nightmare.
More detailed rundown:
I start out wandering about a semi-familiar place, generated from assorted memories. It tends to be places far removed from my actual home, so the setting being a holiday is common. There are lots of people around, but I'm on my own.
At some point, I get done wandering, and go to be with my family or my girlfriend. There isn't any interaction to speak of, just sharing the space, walking about, etc. Sometimes there's a feeling of purpose (e.g. got to go here or there) but nothing more.
Time passes and I find myself alone again. I explore this new place. It's empty of people, sometimes daytime, sometimes not.
The feeling of not being alone emerges. The environment feels pretty creepy by this time; dark hallways, a total lack of all people where there were not long before, etc.
At this point I'm usually searching for something that I need to escape the place. I never know what, and I never find it.
As the foreboding feeling intensifies, right before actual nightmare terror floods me, I wake up, and everything is okay.
I feel like it has something to do with my imposter syndrome.
