This got a 10 from Edge.

It’s getting better once it opens up and so much explore to find! Incredible.

Parksey wrote:Yeah at the moment the mission design is standard. Jim Sterling took quite a strong reaction to the realism/controls, but said that at least the core story and missions were brilliant.

So far they are enjoyable, granted, but not brilliant. Nothing has happened so far that has surprised me. The good thing about GTA V was that I felt the missions were a step up from before and were often quite unique or quirky.

Still early on mind, so these could just be tutorials masked as missions.

I think I'm coming to the end of chapter 2 and haven't had any standout missions so far. There was one Micah mission where you had to break him out of jail, and the game directs you to use a device to pull the bars from the window rather than letting you decide how to do it which was quite disappointing.

I’m shocked how many buildings you can’t go into in this. I kind of thought we’d moved past that. Ok, not for games set in cities, but stuff like this it feels like you should be able to enter every building. At the moment I’d say most you can’t.

I find that remarkable, I really can't get into it, I'm probably about 6 hours in and I'm not finding it enjoyable at all. The gun play feels unsatisfying, many of the missions involve riding for long periods with nothing to do and in general I find the controls pretty sluggish. I'm probably pretty bad at the game, but there must be something I'm missing here? From the short time I've played it I'd give it a six and that's only due to the technical achievement on display. I'm pretty gutted about this, I wanted to enjoy the game but I'm finding little motivation to go back :(

My copy turned up today (Xbox One X). Looking forward to trying it out on Monday, though I'm not expecting a rollicking first day's play.

One of the things I liked about GTA Vice City in particular is that it wasn't overwhelming to begin with, whereas more recent open world games can take quite a long time to get going/into because they're just so big and vast. It's like the game doesn't actually begin until 8 hours in or something, and nothing is properly explained. There's positives to that, but also many frustrations - especially for the time poor.

There’s no way you could give it a 10 from a genuine critical appraisal point of view there’s just way to much junk and bad design. At some point though review scores switched to how enthusiastic you are about a game with ratings effectively falling into bad/decent/good/really good/really really good with the the latter being a 9.5 - 10 for most sites. And under that system it’s pretty easy to see why those scores are awarded.

EDGE often score games on artistic merit as much as actually being fun games to play. I always think of them a bit like the film magazines you only find in private, 1 room cinemas that will happily call a film "an ordeal" and still give it a 10 because it's art.*

*Not that this is wrong. It's just not what I look for in a film.

I'm not normally a rockstar fan, last thing they made I genuinely enjoyed was Vice City.

But I am loving RDR2.

The basic gameplay loop is very satisfying and the controls in particular the shooting work well. They can be adjusted in the options menu to more traditional with less snap to and Auto aim.

The feel of the game is amazing and the amount of wildlife is the best seen in an open world. Alligator animations are so cool.

There are issues which impact the game but every game has some issues. So far it's a solid 9/10 from me.

Wish my image sig would work

Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but I would strongly disagree with that judging from where I am in the game. God of war is far better, granted it's a totally different genre, but I had fun almost immediately with that title.

What aiming options have you changed? Might try your settings out, see if it improves things for me.

I think by the time I finish this (which may be a long time given how bloody packed it is) I’ll probably give it the edge over GOW but it’s a close thing. GOW obviously has the edge in terms of being a more structured and designed experience from start to finish. The world in this though is pretty unbelievable.

No way is this 10/10. No game should require so much perseverance to become enjoyable. Technically it’s superb and as a living world it’s amazing, but it’s so badly explained, has poor controls and frustrates more than it should. You only have to look at someone for a few seconds and they either run or pull a gun. I ended up getting a bounty because a dog ran in front of my horse and I committed assault?!

When it’s good it’s fantastic but when it’s not it’s beyond a chore. Probably a 7 for me at the moment.

No argument about the technical achievement form me. Can I ask at what point did you start really enjoying yourself?

I’ve been enjoying it the whole time, that doesn’t stop me pointing out its flaws.

That said I really started to feel at home in the world from about 15 hours in. I’ve sat and played poker for several hours. Many sessions have just involved wandering around existing in the world. Yesterday after a mission I just sat and watch the sun set. I like being in this world, even with all its frustrations.
