How are PC players finding their RDR2 experience? I'm hearing it's a bit temperamental and no one's got a handle on just why that is.

Red Dead Redemption 2 had a lot of issues at launch, and so far, those seem to be largely persisting. Most of them are related to the Rockstar Launcher not opening Red Dead 2, Red Dead Redemption 2 crashing, stuttering/freezing, or exhibiting poor performance. Even still, we managed to put together a CPU benchmark in Red Dead Redemption 2. We only had the issue where RDR2 won't launch one time, and that was "fixed" by changing the entire motherboard and its BIOS alike. AMD wasn't the only processor afflicted with Rockstar Games' poor launch, though: Intel's facing the RAGE plague again wherein performing better equates performing worse. If that sentence doesn't make sense, you're not alone in being confused about it -- check the video for more discussion in our CPU benchmarking & technical review of Red Dead 2 on PC. We're looking at Intel vs. AMD CPUs today.

This guy got it working but couldn't tell you exactly why

And this is why, for me, consoles are the only way to play games. PCs are too different from each other. I haven't got the knowledge, or time, to fix things like change a motherboard or the Bios.

Gimme a console every day of the week and twice on Sundays

That's a *very* rare occurrence. As rare as RRoD, YLoD, etc.

You still need to tweak around on settings to do this, that and the other though on PC dont you? My only selection option on console is to toggle between resolution or frame rate and that's only on some games.

Most games will auto detect settings for you, or your graphics card will probably come with a user friendly dashboard that will optimise settings for you as well.

There's only so much they can do if the developers have made a badly optimised port, though.

Which can be as difficult or as simple as you want. (You can toggle between pre-sets, or dive in and do things more granularly.) It's not that difficult to figure out.

One of the supposed reasons RDR2 is giving so much jip on PC is it's so much more demanding than other games. So where normally someone could easily play a game on ultra or high, with RDR2 they may need to knock it down to medium. Okay, so the downside to that is it's not as straightforward to play as on consoles, but the upshot is it's the best version of the game.

PC games have been a doddle to play for years now, this just sounds like poor development from R* more than anything.

My PC is basically 5 years old now but I know I can still turn on and play pretty much any game released on consoles at as good or better settings without any trouble or fiddling at all. If people want to tweak and improve/optimise then the option is there but it really is just as simple as plug and play these days in pretty much every situation.

The real bad old days are a true distant memory - fiddling with CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, sorting out your HIMEMs and arsing around with sound configuration until you found IRQ and DMA settings that actually worked etc.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has a lot of graphics settings that need a definition, incl: Parallax Occlusion Mapping, Volumetric Raymarch Resolution, and Screen Space Ambient Occlusion.

This content includes some Red Dead Redemption 2 PC graphics settings comparisons, with a heavy focus on technical explanation.

The vast majority of games released on PC run fine on most hardware providing it is relatively modern. Don't make excuses for devs like Rockstar putting out shitty ports.

Do YOU have unlimited FPS and stuttering? Cap RDR2's FPS to 120.

Caved and grabbed this for £35 on Cdkeys.

Hated the first so we'll see how this one holds up. Really I just want a world to disappear into for a while.

I wasn't too sure for the opening bit, but by the time I'd finished playing I felt it was the best game I've ever played.

Fingers crossed! An hour to go on the download (which, considering the size, has been incredibly quick)

You strike me as the kind of person who will take their sweet time with this, switch to first person every now and then, just stop and watch the world go by. If you let it get under your skin, it'll send shivers down your spine how real the world can feel

I love Valentine, it feels like a real place to me, like somewhere I've actually been for real.

Best game ever.

I've had better days.

I'm playing almost entirely in first person. I know "immersion" is used a lot these days but strawberry float, they conjured a real strawberry floating world here. The campsite alone is a thing of wonder.
