Red Dead Redemption turns 10 years old - share your highlights

Today marks 10 years since Red Dead Redemption first launched on Xbox 360 and PS3. What are your memories/highlights of the game?

I have actually never finished RDR and probably only put a few hours into it (I plan to play through it though on Xbox One via BC) but a memory that sticks out in my mind is from around the launch of the game. Channel 4 showed a Red Dead Redemption programme that was actually taken from the game itself. It was a mission where Marsden had to infiltrate a house and rescued a lady who had been taken hostage.

It was really good as it was the first time I had sat down and watched proper gameplay footage of the game plus it was really interesting having Channel 4 show this (it was on a Friday Night as well from what I remember) does anyone else remember watching that?

I actually played this mission in the time I spent playing the game but the hostage was killed sadly

I bought this on PS3 for £5 from Sainsburys a few years ago and have yet to play it :datass:

A true classic, I put many an hour into the original.

Standout memories include the haunted house on the hill (and the little shootout village right near it) which was always fun to visit and clear of baddies.

One of the things it really nailed was when you were in a patch of really hot, barren desert or bushland and the sun would be beating down on you, the sound of the environment would just be so oppressive - snakes hissing, crickets clicking, distant winds or animals - just so immersive :datass:

I loved it when it first released but gave it a replay shortly before RDR2 came out and I don't think it holds up that well. The gameplay was never particularly amazing but even the story and characters weren't as strong as I remembered.

My standout moment of the game was when you first entered Mexico, I was lucky enough it was at sunset (don’t think it was scripted?), when ‘Far Away’ starts playing I was just mesmerised :wub:

To this day it’s one of the few games I’ve wanted to 100%, an absolutely superb game from start to finish.

I can hardly remember it.

One of my favourite games from that generation. Sometimes, it's nice to load it up and just...exist in it.

An amazing game I'm perfectly happy to never play again.

But I still never forgave it for forcing you to have to play as Jack after completing it, even if it was realistic. Put me off doing anything post-game.

RDR2 spoilers just in case...
...and then they do the exact same thing again. Would have rather played as Arthur post-game.

I think I picked it up whilst I had something else on the go so only tired it out and never went back to it. I did like what I played tho so I will go back eventually.

Still waiting for that PC port.

My thoughts about both games. In patches, they’re incredibly immersive and, like the hostage rescue from the house, I think they form very strong memories of moments but they’re stretched too thin and the traversal and waiting between each moment of excitement made he games dull for me.

I focus tested on it with Rockstar. Loved it.

I remember it boring the life out of me after arriving in Mexico, but I returned to it 2/3 years later and got well into it, the DLC as well - headshotting zombies with your favourite repeater didn’t get old, ever.
Loved the ending, very bold. The characters in Rockstar games feel like characters, not people, if that makes sense, which grates fairly quickly.

Very boring game.

For all of RDR 2's much advertised realism and camp lifestyle, I found going back and forth to that hovel tiresome throughout the entire game. Yet when I think back to the original, the ranch at the start of the game had a homely feel and I can still remember how good it was to revist after a few missions away, feeling like you always had a nice cosy base somewhere rooting you in the game world.

Now I'm sure much of that is just the nostalgia talking and there were a couple of moments in RDR2 that gave that sense, I think the couple of times the whole camp has a party for example. Still it's interesting that the sequel which I think Rockstar just wanted to be more of everything seems to have lost so much of what made the original so lastingly popular in the public concious

RDR2 suffers from what I find a lot of open world games suffer now, the map is too big unless you have hours and hours to get stuck into it.

RDR1's map was the perfect size in my opinion. Big enough to explore but not too big that you don't get use to finding your way around it.

Loved it.

One of my fave games ever.
