I can't stop listening to the theme song after watching that. It's the best opening and closing titles to any show.

If that really was the final episode, then it was a far better ending than the likes of Only The Good.

Particularly enjoyed the return of Holly, and the many versions of Rimmer as he was being upgraded too.

I enjoyed that overall. My main criticism would probably be that it takes itself a bit too seriously too much of the time, like they couldn't quite decide if they wanted to do something more comedic or something more serious.

And comedy shows trying to do serious parts are something I always hated. (I'm looking at you Fresh Prince of Bel-Air)

I just saw the ending of Season 8. What the strawberry float was that.

Season 8 I think I preferred overall to Season 7, but it kind of just ignored every plot point from Season 7 and then ended on a never resolved cliffhanger. Wtf.

The ending of season 8 was absolute shite.

The original ending however (which had been filmed) actually wrapped things up nicely.

For me, this is canon rather than the ending that was screened...

Series 8 is really strawberry floating weird, in some ways there was a conscious effort to move back toward the "traditional" elements of the earlier series after 7 - live audience, less drama elements, bringing Rimmer and the crew back etc. but at the same time it veers off into some really strawberry floated up territory both in terms of tone (Krytie TV... :dread:) and the "broadness" of the humour - I mean what the strawberry float were they thinking with Pete? :fp:

I think I preferred 8 over 7 at the time they came out but on reflection I prefer 7 these days. Cassandra is probably the only really good episode from series 8.

I think my problems with season 7 after just watching it is there wasn't really anything funny happening at all. All the jokes seemed to be about how Chris was a woman and haha that's so different and the other main plot thread seemed to be Kryten losing it thinking that Chris was going to steal Lister away from him. I seriously felt the show missed Rimmer as well.

Now I've got to find somewhere to re-watch back to earth then I've effectively caught up on what I remember. Season 8 seemed to just drop the plot point that Chris wanted to go back to her own universe as well which is just strawberry floating weird. The way they handled the crew coming back was ok, but the fact they ended up being bottom rung again was a bit gooseberry fool.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I will defend series 7 to the death, to the very end* I tells ya! :capnscotty:

*please note series 7 is only 2 episodes long; if you believe there to be any episodes in series 7 other than 'Tikka To Ride' and 'Stoke Me A Clipper', you are sadly mistaken

Just to add onto my thoughts on Series 8, I think if Pete was only 1 part and Kryten had reverted it right away it would've been 100 times better. I don't understand how he, who up until that point in the show had been shown to be very intelligent and has dealt with many odd devices before suddenly somehow forgets how to use a machine he just used to freeze the whole crew. It made no strawberry floating sense man.

They wasted the chance of a really good twist with that, as they could have had Lister discuss everything with Captain Hollister, who in turn rewards his bravery and maturity (compared with the Lister he knew) with a promotion.

Therefore, you'd have Lister with a much higher rank, ordering season 1 era Rimmer around (and to add insult to injury, Kryten and Cat could have been given higher ranks too, as Cat could have been given a pilot role, and Kryten as science officer).

So I just saw the promised land. I enjoyed it, it was a bit slow at parts and you can seriously tell they're all way older now.

The only thing I hated, is they've retconned what the promised land is. It's Fiji based on Episode 1 of Season 1 and in Cat's introduction they even confirm that. T_T

Finally got around to watching this.

Was decent in places and strawberry floating awful in others.

The best bit was when Holly's backup happened

If they had done the awful catflap joke one more time, I'd have screamed. Once was bad enough, repeating it was unforgivable.

It definitely had its moments, and at points was genuinely great, but like anything in the post series 6 era you had to sit through some dire moments to get to the good stuff.

I don't begrudge them carrying it on though, the Dave stuff has been mostly decent and if they all enjoy making it and enough people watch it then it's all fine. I long ago got over my disappointment that it wasn't the same quality as the golden days

Thanks for reminding me how bad this was, Mooooogy :(.

Did anyone watch The First Three Million Years? It's a short documentary narrated by David Tennant and is basically essential viewing for all fans . Really enjoyable. I believe it's on regular catch up.

First Three Million years was okay, definitely worth a watch.

Also if anyone hasn't seen Rob Grant (co-creator and writer for series 1-6), Ed Bye (director for lots of the BBC era) and Paul Jackson (producer) have been doing lockdown commentaries for the show over on the Red Dwarf Quarantine YouTube channel.

They have occasional guests from the cast and crew of the show and it's been a good watch, even if just to see Rob Grant involved in the show again in some loose capacity
