I don't even think the game knows what it wants to be, but whatever it is just isn't appealing
How would you describe it? Not delivering on immersive sim?
It's definitely the least "immersive sim" game that Arkane have ever produced, based on my ~5 hours experience. It's basically a straight shooter with powers and some light touch nods toward "playing your way" - not too dissimilar to a Far Cry scenario basically.
So many aspects of the design don't mesh well together. Endless, worthless loot means there is no real reward for achieving things - the economy of the game is just awful (coming from the team that gave us the superb resource scarcity vs recycling setup of Prey as well!
), the space being so open means you can often just ignore most of the locations or encounters that might have made a journey interesting - an initial "oh look a house that I could find a way into, maybe I can fight my way in, or use a lockpick on a back door, or find an open window to climb through!" rapidly loses appeal when there's nothing interesting to find in there from either a narrative or resource perspective and when the encounters you have with enemies there are not interesting, and so because the world is open you just stop bothering to visit anywhere...
The arsenal at your disposal being almost entirely just "things to point at people and go boom" means there's little to no experimentation with resources and finding clever ways to use things - even the powers that I've had have been very dull and lacking in interesting consequences for gameplay in comparison to what we had in Dishonored/Prey. Again - Prey was a masterclass in "tools not weapons" - everything in the game had multiple uses, could be utilised to achieve unexpected results or manipulate the world/enemies in clever ways and made the player feel clever and rewarded for doing so... there is absolutely nothing here that even approaches that idea.
It's also a profoundly dull/ugly looking game in comparison to what Arkane have given us before. Dishonored and Prey were both never technical showcases but artistically had so much going for them and were to their core interesting and attractive things to look at and worlds to explore - this is just "modern US rural town with military guys and crap vampires everywhere" there's no art or majesty to anything!
The fact that it's also a technical mess is just the cherry on the top of this total lack of sundae! Dishonored 2 was a mess at launch, running at wildly fluctuating framerates even on good PCs and having some odd visual blemishes, but it was so easy to overlook because the gameplay, world design, creativity etc. were all so on point. Here it all just highlights how lacking those aspects are.
I might give it another shot if they sort out some technical stuff, I owe Arkane that much - and it may well be more enjoyable with a different character/with friends - but I'm in no rush to do so - and that fact, that there is a new Arkane game out that after 1 day I have basically given up on, is just a tragedy.
