PostRegion Locked DVD Question
by Rightey » Sun Dec 22, 2019 2:12 am

I got a DVD as a gift for my son, but it's region locked and my dumb Xbox360 (the only DVD player I have other than the one on my desktop PC) won't play it. Any suggestions on the best way to get it on my TV?

I tried ripping it using VLC, but the audio and video don't match up (I tried every format that would work on the 360 according to MS tech support page), and when I tried using Handbrake I get an error as it's the DVD is copy protected.

A friend suggested I just pirate it, but I can't find it in the language I want (again it's for a two year old so just finding subtitles won't work).

I was thinking of just playing it on my PC and casting it to the TV using my Steam link, or Chromecast but as far as I know that would mean I couldn't use my PC for anything else during that time, which is a problem as normally I would be working.

Any suggestions?

Get a super cheap dvd player and look up how to change the region setting on it (maybe do this before purchase). Iirc you can usually change the region setting to 9 which will allow any region.

I haven’t used it for a long time, but there’s an extra file you can install that bypasses the protection. You have to download it separately.

I hate region locking, it's just so unnecessary.

Had it not been for that, i would have been able to get the likes of Stranger Things (region 1 only) by now.

Try ripping it using MakeMKV, it ignores/removes region codes.

Thankfully I think companies have finally wised up now as 4K Blu Rays and videogames are normally region free.

Nah, they're just pulling exactly the same gooseberry fool with digital storefronts instead.
