There was a nice platinum one with 0.6 carats that was 3.5k but got the jeweller down to 2.8 without much bother which makes me think that perhaps it’s a rip off?

Obviously want something flashy and smart but don’t wanna get mugged off - seems like a minefield tbh

The fact you’re buying a diamond means you’re being mugged off by default. The whole industry is a massive con based on inflated prices in my opinion. And the “month’s salary” bollocks was from a marketing campaign by De Beers. So successful they ran it again in the 80s but bumped it to two months.

But unfortunately most of us end up buying them anyway so on it goes.

Anyway, it’s worth doing a bit of research on the different qualities of a diamond-the GIA scale has the 4 Cs (clarity, colour, cut and carat) and what you really want to do is work out what qualities are most important to your partner. Price goes up as each quality goes up but you’ll find people get hung up on things like having a flawless diamond (which you can’t really see the difference by the naked eye anyway).

I’d recommend doing what I did-proposing with a £20 ring off Amazon and then sitting down with your fiancé at a Jewellars so she can decide what she wants to wear on her finger for the rest of her life. The jewellar will be able to explain the pros and cons of each quality so between you, you can decide which qualities you want to maximise and which you can go lower down the scale on to get the best ring to work for your budget.

I’m no expert on prices but for reference we got a 0.5 carat ring for £2.5k. They definitely pitch prices high knowing people want the satisfaction of pushing them down.

On a side note, when we went in I could have hugged the jeweller because the first thing they said when they saw my wife’s fingers was “a 1 carat diamond will look too big on her small fingers, go for a half”.

Where are you based? If you can get down to Birmingham, I’d recommend a day trip to the Jewellary Quarter where you’ll have plenty of choice and they all really know their stuff. I’d personally recommend the jewellar we used-Mitchel and Co. Good quality, manageable prices and excellent customer service.

I’m in Cheshire surrounded by rich people so prices are high by default I think

I’m not into diamonds myself but I know stylistically she will want something sparkly

I was actually asking around because I wanted a black diamond or very deep ruby or something but couldn’t find anything when I saw a diamond one that looks nice

Tbh I don’t intend to put it through a diamond checker at any point so I don’t really care as long as it looks alright, I just don’t want to get mugged off

I know she is quite knowledgeable about jewellery and all that gooseberry fool but she and I tbh will prefer getting the real flashy one for the proposal

Either someone rich enough to not care buys it at that price or they 'let' someone haggle down so they feel like they're getting a bargain so will buy it rather than walk, either way its cash money for the jewellers.

I recently discovered that flippantly saying "I am never going to get married" is something you probably shouldn't say to your love interest... whoops.

This post is exempt from the No Context Thread.

I didnt want white gold really as the lady in the jewellers was saying that they have to be replated with rhodium as the finish fades or something and platinum doesnt do that

gf has skin that seems to get strawberry floated up by everything so dont want to put the rhodium coating stuff because knowing my luck it will go tits up

I know Ill get it wrong in the end but if I at least have a valid thought process behind what I get I think Ill survive

The counter argument to this is the ring will be worn and enjoyed every day for the rest of their life. When you frame it like this, spending a decent amount sounds much more reasonable.

Of course, no one should spend more than they can afford though.

I think I spent £150 on my wife engagement ring, didn’t see the point in blowing ridiculous amounts of money on a ring, same came for wedding rings.

One of my best mates, on the bus home after a wedding, was feeling loved up with his long term girlfriend and tried to say to her “I’m not saying we should get married right now but I can really see that future for us” or something along those lines.

What actually happened is he got his words mixed up in his head in his drunken state and turned to her and simply said:

“I don’t want to marry you”.

I’ve been looking on the site drummy linked and prices just seem random

More carats less carats just random prices on it - I cant really work out what makes something worth more or less. Don’t get it

The main thing to remember is that it's the diamond that dictates the price of the ring. The size(s), the number, the quality, the setting, the cut/style all play a part, but primarily it's the size/weight and the style of the diamond.

Take this one for example. Quality of the white gold ring material is the same as the one my missus has, it has a similar number of smaller encrusted diamonds, the diamond in the middle is the same style (solitaire) except the diamond is 1/4 carat whereas my wife's is 1/2 carat (bigger, heavier). And as a result the full price of the ring jumps from £1199 to £2499.

Hope that helps to a degree, I'm by no means educated on rings and stuff, I've just had to buy a few. Got her an eternity ring last month.

Agreed.

I lucked out in several ways. We went into the jewellers when they had a 40% off sale and she picked it out, so I couldn't really go wrong.

[DannyDyer]You fellas are all getting fakkin' mugged off![/DannyDyer]

This is why I got married when we were still at uni - far lower expectations on the price of the ring! :slol:

I think where rings are concerned you need to go with what feels right for you and your partner - if they are someone who adores jewellery, or someone who receives and feels love through things like that then absolutely go crazy with the diamond!

But not everyone is like that - for us it was more about what the ring represented than what the ring was itself. I went with an antique engagement ring for my wife - central diamond surrounded by sapphires, she loved the idea that it had some history behind it and that had more resonance with her than whether I paid thousands for it.

I think both of our actual wedding rings (mine is white gold, hers platinum) cost more than the engagement ring did!
