I don't think "well there's this old poem therefore you should accept everyone who shows up" is really a valid argument. Also, wasn't that poem written at a time when the US only accepted whites?

I think it's mainly that no other administration would ever have tried to argue against the poem in the first place.
They may have not agreed with it but they would have handled the whole affair in a more diplomatic way but the Trump administration has zero diplomatic skills and just claims everything they disagree with is wrong. It's the whole idea they have that they can never be wrong and will never backtrack on anything ever which can also be seen in the defensiveness of Sarah Sanders (the white house press secretary) who defends Trump and just comes up with increasingly bizarre reasons to defend him.
