The Assad regime has been attacking its citizens with chemical weapons for literally years.

I just looked it up and it seems like there's been 7 chemical weapons attacks, at least one of them being confirmed to have been carried out by ISIS, while 2 were confirmed to be done by Assad according to the UN.

It's almost as if Russia wanted a story to bury their British poisoning problem, or wanted to divert western rage into Syria so that they can get on with a dramatic escalation in the war in Ukraine, so decided to stage a gas attack to divert the world's attention.

So Russia, who went into Syria years ago and spent presumably millions or billions of dollars to support Assad, now, on the verge of victory, decide they need to use chemical weapons which could lead to the West invading Syria in order to take the heat off them for poisoning a spy, or perhaps continuing their war in Ukraine, both of which have basically had no repercussions for them outside of some sanctions...

The most likely non-conspiracy theory I can come up with is that chemical attacks aren't directly approved by Assad, and some Syrian hard man general/ other officer decided to use them without getting top level clearance, and given Syria is a dictatorship with probably a lot of nepotism going on it's not that hard to imagine I guess.

From the external groups, it would either be the Western backed rebels, Turkey (although that's unlikely as a rebel win would mean a stronger Kurdish presence), Israel, or Saudi Arabia. The latter two because they both want to destabilize Syria and by extension Iran.

They've also been using barrel bombs for ages. Including 9 in 2018. So yeah, while I am a bit suspicious about their being attacked now of all times, it's not as though Assad doesn't have a very recent track record for being monumentally gooseberry fool to his own people.

The French defense minister has said Russia was warned ahead of these attacks on Syria. And more generally, days ago by Trump on Twitter...
