I wouldn't want Hillary or Trump as president.
That wasn't the question and it wasn't the option on the 2016 ballot papers.
Fortunately even on the ballot you didn't have to pick between them and personally I'd have voted for neither as both candidates are significant shifts to the right compared to where I sit.
I am not a fan of Clinton, but I recognise that there is a vast difference between her and Trump. A vast difference.
If people had stopped whining about Bernie Sanders and had looked at the two options (and there really are only two options in America) and thought about what a Trump presidency meant, we would be living in a better world right now.
Not voting for a right winger than you don't like is one thing. Not voting for a right winger that you don't like and then allowing Donald Trump into power is insanity.
I think Trump is very hamstrung in terms of damage he could cause, but I will accept any infringement on civil rights is a terrible move so on that perspective I might grudgingly accept Clinton would have been the least worst option given some of Trump's moves like the transgender military ban for example.
But the longer term damage for progressives in shifting to the right from Obama I find an uncomfortable position too, which is why I'm glad the Dems at least have the chance to get it right again in 2020.
Whatever you think of Clinton, she would have done more for progressives than just the transgender ban.
Just quickly off of the top of my head without thinking about it I can name Obamacare and the Paris accord. Clinton was pushing for healthcare reform back when she was First Lady, she would have done a lot more for the progressive cause than you give her credit for. She is also the sort of person that thinks about her legacy and place in history, she is cynical and self centred but that would have pushed her on to achieve left wing (for America!!) goals.
Would Bernie have been better for lefties? Of course! But even George W Bush would have been better than Trump.
