We're not there yet, but the investigation into Trump's lawyer is probably going to get us closer.
My attempt at a basic summary of what's going on here recently, sorry if I've forgotten anything:
- Porn star Stormy Daniels claims she'd had an affair with Trump during his current marriage. Stormy also claims she was paid $130K by Trump's long-time lawyer Michael Cohen a month before the US election in an attempt to buy her silence, and says she'd received threats to her safety.
- Cohen denied Stormy had been paid anything and denied that the affair took place, but then in February, Cohen admitted he paid Stormy $130K but claimed it was out of his own pocket and nothing to do with Trump. Lulz.
- After Cohen paid Stormy $130K, the Trump Campaign was billed $129,999.72 via a handful of payments within days through the Trump Organisation. If Trump Campaign funds were used to buy Stormy's silence just before the US election, that's a felony in violation of federal election law.
- The same lawyer, Michael Cohen, was named in former MI6 agent Christopher Steele's dossier which looked into Trump's connections with Russia. The dossier alleged that Cohen has had secret meetings with Kremlin officials in Prague in 2016 prior to the US election. Cohen has denied ever being in Prague. FBI sources supposedly leaked to journalists in recent days that they have evidence that Cohen travelled to the Czech Republic through Germany in Summer 2016.
- This month, Cohen's office, New York apartment and his home were all raided simultaneously by the FBI, where they seized documents and recordings going back many years. Cohen has been directly involved in many of Trump's business dealings, and is alleged to have made more hush money payments to other women too. It was also revealed that the FBI has been investigating Cohen for months now, and had already been granted a warrant to access his emails prior to the raids.
- Cohen sought to keep the name of his third client secret, but a judge ordered it to be revealed today - it's Fox News anchor Sean Hannity, arguably Trump's biggest propaganda mouthpiece on TV who regularly gooseberry fools all over the FBI's Trump/Russia investigation and the Stormy Daniels story.
- Trump's people are now trying to prevent seized documents from being used in court. The investigations could lead to charges of bank fraud, money laundering, and threats of violence - all state crimes which Trump can't pardon Cohen for and could lead back to Trump himself.
