I never had a problem with that boss fight, even on Madhouse it was largely just a case of ducking under any lunges and kicking things at him till he died.

I never had a problem either until my recent 4th playthrough and then, weirdly, I struggled like an absolute bastard with it. Must've been having a jelly fingers day.

Just picked it up again and still haven't beat him, that fight is an absolute chore.

Literally the same for me, but I hadn't played it in 4.5 years :fp: I removed all the antique coins to free up space because I forgot their purpose!

My advice is to queue up a video and try to follow exactly how other players begin the game (a few shotgun shells to the head then stand to his left when he reaches for the chainsaw so you can pick up yours at the same time).

It took me a few tries after that but I finally got there. The game gets so much better after that, so don't give up.

After trying to beat him on like 3 separate occasions (across multiple weeks) and realising I wasn't actually having fun I genuinely snapped the disc in half and threw it in the bin

I realised the only RE game I truly like is 4 because it's actually a platinum game in disguise.

I think most horror games are fundamentally flawed because of the way games have to work. So ones that rely on atmosphere and helplessness often lose their aura after you've played for a few hours. At that point the gameplay has to do the heavy lifting and the gameplay in this game was dire.

Finished earlier in preparation for Village and started Not A Hero (Redfield DLC) so hopefully get that done tomorrow and maybe start that Zoe DLC too, both of which I've never played.

The DLCs are both really quick and can easily be finished in one sitting. You definitely have time.

I only ever got the base game and was thinking about getting the gold edition for the dlc, is the End of Zoe and Footage packs worth it?

Only realised the other day that this was on Game Pass so thought I'd give it a shot.

Checked out after about an hour, can't put my finger on exactly what it is but these games just don't appeal to me these days.

I think I'm just done with "horror" games in general, I can't remember the last time I played one that I really enjoyed. Which is a shame because some of my favourite games from back in the day are from the horror genre

Finished this on stream yesterday - I enjoyed it!

Any of the DLC's actually worth doing?

Also wtf did they do to Chris?

Tried to make him more real I suppose and got backlashed to fuckery for it hence him looking more like his boulder punching self from 5 in Village/8.

I just played Not a Hero and End of Zoe. Both were enjoyable but I preferred Not a Hero.

I’ve not tried any of the other scenarios like the ones from Banned Footage or Jack’s birthday. They all sound a little like mini games to me and don’t really appeal.

EDIT: I should add that I got the complete edition for next to nothing in a PSN sale.

Playing this again in lieu of 8 and holy strawberry float. I remember it being scary but I'm only 40 minutes in and I've twice screamed so loudly my wife had to come and check on me (when Mia jumps out at you and when Jack busts through the wall. I knew both of these were coming but still shat it).

Also, Jack remains a strawberry floating amazing character.

Jack Baker is a legitimately top tier Resi character, up there with the greats. "Welcome to the Family, Son," is Jill Sandwich tier chat too.

I put a bit more time into this again last night, I'm still clearly in the opening period for things and so it's probably harsh to judge it too much yet, but that said it's been very "meh" so far.

The bit where you watch the video of the guys filming in the house was mildly diverting in that I hadn't expected them to make it playable, but within about 5 seconds I was just willing all 3 of them to die because they were a right bunch of annoying banana splits, and not in an endearing Frank West from Dead Rising way but more of a "how the strawberry float are people like you allowed to exist" Fred West kind of way!

I love how much fun he's having throughout the whole experience. It was worth failing the garage fight a few times just to see him hop into the car.

I think that's the point really. If you're not all in by the time Jack first shows up, I'd say you're not in at all. The opening few hours are by far the scariest, and therefore the best, of the whole game.

It hasn't been particularly scary so far, the first arrival at the house was somewhat unsettling in a "this place is dark and gross" way, but even that sense of uneasiness at your surroundings has been done better in other games I'd argue. Other than it has been very predictable jump scare territory up to this point.

It does have a nice look and feel to things though, just the novelty of playing a RE game in first person is in itself quite interesting so I'm going to persevere for now and see if it manages to win me over

Good lord. It's still the scariest game I've ever played, and as mentioned the first few hours are...horrifying. Worse than Alien Isolation, worse than RE2 Remake, maybe even worse than PT (which it obviously takes heavy inspiration from). Even now I can't play for more than 15 minutes before having to step away. The atmosphere is so completely stifling, and the pacing so well done, that it's never less than terrifying for me.

Different strokes and all that, I guess.

Resident Evil 7 in VR (particularly those first few hours) is up there with my favourite experiences in gaming. At times I was genuinely too scared to look around the corner

Yeah definitely a different strokes thing!

I think for me the problem is that the scares in this (so far at least) have been very, for want of a better term, "scripted". Walking along a path and see a creepy guy disappear out of view, bet he's going to turn up unexpectedly! Oh there's a guy with his back to me, he's going to turn around a look horrible! Oh look I've gone in a dark room something is going to jump out at me! etc. It's a tried and tested formula and it kind of works in a sense, but I don't know, it feels like it is something that has been easy to become desensitised to in a way. Even if you can't know exactly when one of these scares is coming you know the general form and function of them, what the common trigger events are and so on and as a result it kind of loses its edge. It's like the dogs in RE1 - the possibility space for what could happen in the game had not been set by that point so it was genuinely unexpected that they would suddenly crash through the window, but the same trick with the Licker in RE2 (and the repeated uses of the same pattern several times over since) just isn't going to have the same effect. It's hard to be too scared when you know that you are the trigger for the event, the simulation is not going to throw out something unusual and genuinely unexpected to shock you.

More free-form games where it's not so easy to map out the possibility space of what can scare you, how enemies can behave etc. presents more of a fear factor for me, something like Alien Isolation is far more terrifying, even if that also can eventually be seen through for the smoke and mirrors that are behind it
