I'm currently playing through this on XBox having abandoned my PSVR attempt because I just couldn't hack it. I sort of agree with both sets of opinions above. In VR the atmosphere, grimness, sense of dread is just all encompassing but on a TV it almost becomes a ghost train with the lights on. The thing I don't like is the Resident Evilness of it all and by that I mean the inventory, the puzzles and the stuff that is in all of them. It kind of feels like they wanted to make something really different but almost bottled it a little.

Inventory management is the best thing about RE!

Yeah I think if I was playing in VR it would be a very different experience!

That would help get over one of the things that is acting as a bit of a barrier for me, which is essentially what I mentioned earlier - how scripted lots of it feels. Things like when you get captured and wake up at the dinner table, it's just not very engaging because the agency has been removed from the player and so you're just sat watching a slightly dull cutscene play out in a way that doesn't really make you feel like you're actually there, despite the first person perspective. Some dude waving a knife in my face isn't scary or threatening in any way because it's all just scripted, either he kills me with it or doesn't - I can't do anything about it so it's just a case of "okay lets watch this happen then" - experiencing that in VR would probably help as things like ramming the knife right close to the players face might feel more real!

It's a very messy and clunky game to actually play, and not in a way that enhances the experience for me. Some games can use elements like that to help elevate the game feel, hell the first Resi game got a huge amount out of how stiff the controls were because it made encounters far more threatening and dangerous to experience, but here it just doesn't have the same effect.

I too abandoned my VR playthrough due to escalating underwear costs. I have since played it on TV and some of the horror seems borderline comedy. Jack keeps on wandering in to rooms, muttering, and walking out again. I actually sympathise, there is nothing worse than forgetting why you have gone in to a room.

That said, it can certainly be unsettling but i am going to put the game down again not because its too scary, but i'm just not really enjoying it. Everytime i am chased around by an enemy that i'm not sure whether i should be fleeing from or killing i get a little more worn down on it. I actually muttered "oh will you just strawberry float off" to the crazy old lady yesterday, as her constant stalking was making it impossible to navigate the game world. Some people dig this, but i do not. I can however, see how if that frustration is substitued for true fear (as it was for me in VR), it does make those game mechanics an entirely different proposition.

Tried this, didn’t like it. Played the Remakes, and just so much more fun. RE8 looks more in line with that, so I’ll get it when cheap.

Yeah this is a big issue as well, there's a real lack of certainty around what exactly the game expects of you at times - am I supposed to be fighting someone or escaping? Is this a cutscene or an active part of gameplay? etc.

I've no idea if ammo scarcity is a thing in this like it was in the older games but if it is then having it be unclear whether I'm supposed to be fighting someone or not and potentially wasting my ammo is a huge problem.

The melee is gooseberry fool as well, there's no weight or reactivity to anything, it's like being back in Oblivion or something where you've just got characters swinging away at each other, playing canned attack animations until someone takes enough damage.

Yep, agree with that also.

Items do seem to respawn next to you on occasion upon loading (specifically when i died on a boss several times with next to no healing items), but i have found myself to be out of ammo on several occasions, and usually its been due to me trying to kill an invincible enemy.

I’ve only played through this on normal but I don’t think I was ever short on ammo. There is more than enough to kill most of what stands in your way and I thought it was pretty obvious what you could and couldn’t fight.

The inability to differentitate the enemies that can't be defeated and the lack of ammo issue are intrinsically linked - you probably either have a problem with both or neither.

Any of the DLC's actually worth doing?

Also wtf did they do to Chris?

Tried to make him more real I suppose and got backlashed to fuckery for it hence him looking more like his boulder punching self from 5 in Village/8.

I never realised in 8 they used the same face model but just basically stretched him wider

Got this downloading as its on Game Pass, will be leaving it till I can put a few hours into it once its dark out (wouldn't be the same playing it in the day for me ) so probably Thursday or early next week. I think Village looks really good so thought I should probably play this one first? Although I’ll probably wait for that one to come to Game Pass or be on sale nearer the end of the year.
