This is the problem I'm now having, got the scorpion key and I've got 5 rounds of ammo left and I've lost count of how many times I've died. No option to change to easy either as trying to take down a molded (or 2 at the same time ) or Jack with a knife is strawberry floating ridiculous.

Did you get the shotgun?
Do you have any lockpicks?

I've got 5 rounds left, 1 lockpick, 2 gunpowders, no shotgun yet.

Regarding the broken shotgun, can you fix it using the spare parts? I went and used the spare parts on the broken handgun I found in the trailer.
