This is also a good point. Even 4's combat was a compromise which made you sacrifice movement to engage the enemy.

There's a reason Alien Isolation is one of the best horror games ever made; the combat is decent but a last resort that feels frantic and desperate. I hated Resi 7's combat too but that was more because it became a necessity towards the end and went from a messy, chaotic choice to a slog through enemy after enemy.

I'm praying that 8 actually dials back the combat.

I mean, they have a mercenaries mode where the entire thing is just combat.

The things you described aren't mutually exclusive, plenty of games feel like that while still not having horrible feeling combat.

One of the main problems outside of the interactions is the enemies take no real damage when you shoot them, instead of deforming like they do in stuff like Binary Domain, house of the dead and Doom they just take no visible damage and then their heads suddenly explode on the 10th bullet.

Very happy to see Mercenaries is coming back, will be interesting to see how it plays in First Person compared to third.

Not knowing how many bullets it will take to defeat an enemy is part of what adds tension and threat to even single regular enemies (and I suspect lets the game balance for how much ammo you currently have). So while you can have visible damage and limb damage I don't think the games would benefit from those being reliable indicators of an enemy's health.

I've always found Mercenaries too stressful. It's the time limit that gets me. I mean, I did unlock the handcannon in RE4 but after that I was done.

Those other games don't give you an idea of when an enemy will die, they just make the guns feel more grounded and immersive and the shooting more satisfying.

Part of having an atmosphere is making the player feel immersed, the world and characters reacting how you'd expect them to react helps immensely with that.

I wasn't sure what exactly you meant so fair enough. I didn't see much of the Resi 8 demo but the combat didn't look great - but then I'm set against it from the off for being in first person!

Only being available for 8 hours was a bit mad, and locked at 30 minutes per online account too. Almost like a virtual demo booth at a one day con but without the two hour wait.

8 hours only is ridiculous. Should have been 24-48 at least.

It’s a terrible scheme. I imagine they think they’re creating a buzz, but they’re just pissing people off: those who don’t realise; those who can’t make the time slot; those who don’t have the right console; those who hate playing in a rushed manner.

It's crazy how much more fun the combat is in 4 than in this while still remaining terrifying

The only thing this game has added is bags of flour

I'm currently playing through Resi 7 for the first time. Every time I saw footage or a stream of someone playing it I thought the combat looked sluggish as strawberry float and it turns out...yeah I was right.

What's this gooseberry fool I'm seeing about Sony pulling some contract shenanigans to make this worse on Xbox/ban it coming out on Game Pass?

Why can't they all just let the developers make the games and leave all of this bullshit out of it!?

It 100% is. But I think it works in the game's favour tbh.

Oh quit it with this rubbish

You can make a game scary/scrappy and put you on edge without it feeling like it controls poorly.

There's plenty of examples in the RE franchise as well as in stuff like Condemned 2 or Last of Us.

The enemies are not zombies crawling towards you slowly, they're fast moving lycans, the combat feeling sluggish is not a good thing, especially when it seems like the environments are designed in a way that encourage you to move around to set off traps and barricade doors.

Sony can't afford to buy a Bethesda so expect to say this being a common tactic for them this generation.

Yeah the main character felt like a tank without the restrictions of a tank, but move like he’s covered in treacle, tar, honey and every single sticky substance you can think of.

Easily one of the most overrated RE games.

People are ragging on Resi 7 now? I've truly entered The Twilight Zone. :dread:
