We had crap graphics in the 80s because of technical limitations not through choice.
8-bit? More like "old-shit" if you ask me.
You may have guessed: I'm not really convinced.
What a grump I am.

I agree, I have no idea why people like new games looking like gooseberry fool.Swhy I'd rather the Megaman 9 and 10 games have decent graphics.

Because graphics don't actually matter? Mega Man 9/10 are two of the best downloadable games on the services. Graphics shouldn't matter, 8 bit looks fine and it always has done, you don't need flashy graphics for a good game, I think some games are actually ruined by getting pointless fancy HD graphics.

I'd like to travel to 1985 with this game, and then pass it off as my own work. I'd make millions and be credited as the founder of open world games.

I'm not saying they are bad games, I just can't play them because they look so horrible.

Your loss, I've never had a problem with graphics since I grew up playing games back then, I actually like the older graphical styles, especially late 16bit generation because they seriously perfected that, some of the games looked so good.

Same here. Graphics just don't bother me at all. I still have fun with NES games or even Atari 2600 games. Gameplay is all that matters(I know that sounds silly when I am a JRPG whore).
End of the day

I love 2D gaming but I'm with Samurai on this one. If you're going to copy a style from the past why not use the finest assets of the 2D generation and use 16-bit
Can you imagine something like Yoshi's Island in HD?
Oh no wait, we get Megaman 10 that looks like gooseberry fool from the NES

I love graphics, bit of a graphics whore really, and I genuinely find myself just stopping and taking in the Vista's in RDR. However if a game is fun, then they don't really matter to me at all.
I'd take PixelJunk Shooter over Killzone2 any day.

Pixel Junk Shooter looks gorgeous though.

You think? I mean they serve the purpose perfectly, but I wouldn't go as far as saying it's a gorgeous looking game.

In terms of art style it's lovely. It makes the world what it is. It's a much more pleasant experience to look at than Killzone 2.

I think the retro stuff annoys me in Megaman's case because Megaman 7 and 8 certainly looked better than 9 and 10. Imagine if a new Megaman could look like the recent Wario Land game! A lot of companies seem to rely on nostalgia for existing franchises these days going as far to make the games look like they came from then. It is an artistic choice I just don't like.

The graphics in
PixelJunk Shooter are excellent though.
PJ Eden is another good example of a game that is stylistically retro with a contemporary graphics engine. Limit the palette by all means, but not the resolution.

I think this technically IS an NES game. The original game ran on NES hardware IIRC. This may be Wiiware, but it wouldn't surprise me at all to find out that it's an NES emulator running a ROM image.
The technical limitations are real, in other words.

More than anything, 8-bit is a stylistic choice these days, and one that when done right can be very appealing. Does everything have to be HD and all that guffin? Nay I say, nay!
And Mega Man's never looked right in anything other than 8-bit IMO.
