Famistu was the magazine that everyone clamour over years ago.

Now? They are totally bullshitters nowadays and hardly anyone use them as a reference point to argue why a certain game should be scored more than they are originally given.

Funny enough, I agree with the Double Dash review. But it doesn't stop me enjoying the local multiplayer with my mates. All it matters is that you enjoy the game, regardless of the scores. I mostly pay for games that was recommended by the majority of this forum.

In terms of websites though Famitsu is pretty good for up to date news and Dengeki shortly follows. Outside of the reviews Famitsu is a fantastic magazine from the issues I've seen/read.

Your Famitsu knowledge is about the same level as that of your Star Wars.

So they were genuinely reputable once?

Apparently they were, then Nintendogs happened.

I'm a daily reader of the Famitsu site and I have been for about a year, they have previews to their features/the magazine content up there which is generally much better than their reviews. I only started reading Dengeki's website about a month ago and although the content is similar, it's design is a lot more cluttered than famitsus.

Because their job is to give you accurate reviews to help inform purchases and the magazine industry as a whole has and still is failing to deliver this

Games industry at the time? I don't think i've seen a year as stuffed with quality titles as 2003. Halo 2, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Resi 0, SSX3, GBASP, ZOE2, Amplitude, KOTOR, F-Zero GX, Soul Calibur II, Viewtiful Joe, Freedom Fighters, Sands of Time, BG&E etc

No. Their job is to give you their professional opinion. Whether you use it to inform purchases is up to you.

There's no such thing as an accurate review. At the end of the day, they're just opinions, and your mileage may vary.

That said, you do expect a certain degree of accuracy of comment being applicable to the final product. If, for instance, I said reviewed Mario Kart by saying it was an excellent survival horror (as a deliberately extreme and ridiculous example) then that would be an inaccurate review. Obviously, not a realistic review, but comments about functionality can certainly be reviewed with an eye to the accuracy of the comment, which especially causes an issue when we consider famous poor quality reviews like Driv3r; it claiming a level of technical proficiency that the end product simply didn't reflect.

Am I right in thinking Famitsu's first 40/40 was Ocarina of Time?

I thought Famitsu lost all credibility back when they awarded 40/40 to Nintendogs, I'm sure at one point they were considered THE source for gaming reviews but that time has long passed!

I wouldn't say Edge is a whole lot more reputable these days either, they've given out some dodgy scores over the years and some of their more recent 10's are a key example of that, some wholly undeserving games being massively overscored.

Mario Kart: DD's score on that list is unnecessarily harsh, its the weakest in the series but its still a comfortable 7 for me.

7 is about right for Beyond Good & Evil. We only remember the good bits, but there are only four "dungeons", and the first one is stupidly easy, and the last one is kinda boring.

Perhaps Nintendogs deserved 40/40. I know of a few female gamers (my wife included) who bought a DS just to play it. I'd consider it Nintendo's first real casual success and the game that opened the doors for titles like Brain Training and the success of the Wii.

Ah right, Ill have to remember that pandering to the lowest common denominator is how to get my creations rated highly as masterworks of the breed.
