Surely that can't be legal. You can't own the word 2016.

From what I remember from 2012, the Olympics insist that the host country implement laws like that. So the words “victory”, “performance” and “2016” are not owned by the IOC but businesses in Brazil (or at least those in Rio) will only be able to use them (during the timescale) if they are official sponsors.

Yeah, it was ridiculous in 2012 the things you couldn't do, at least from a marketing perspective. I was working in a company where each branch had their own twitter account, and there was some huge document produced by head office talking about what we could and couldn't tweet. Any direct references to the Olympics were right out, obviously, but so were uses of phrases like "winning" "celebrate with... " or even just talking about people enjoying watching the sport, like we would do with any other major event.

One branch got slammed by head office for tweeting about "medal winning wines" as they were promoting ones that had literally won medals at an international wine competition.

Health experts have told athletes competing in contaminated water to "keep their mouths shut":

I haven't seen this advertised anywhere but the BBC have 8 HD Olympic channels on Sky (probably on other platforms as well).

Channel 472 to 479.

WTF is this gooseberry fool?

An Olympic Charter bye-law states only approved sponsors may reference "Olympic-related terms" from 27 July until midnight on 24 August.

That includes words such as "victory", "performance", "effort" and "2016".

I don't think I've ever watched an opening ceremony (London aside).

The gooseberry fool camera work is really going to get annoying if they keep not showing stuff in the way it's meant to be shown.

Best thing Danny Boyle ever did was taking control away from whoever runs the gooseberry fool Olmpic Broadcasting Company

This is really boring, I can't believe that I'm waiting for the participants to come out and do their lap of honour, that's usually the most boring part.
