Russia will not receive a blanket ban from Rio 2016 following the country's doping scandal, an Olympic source has told the BBC.

strawberry floating hell IOC. Just ban them, they are leaving it until too late to do anything about it. Most governing bodies will probably now say that it is too late for them to review the data etc and that Russia will have the right to appeal so it's not practical to do it.

I think this Olympics will be the first to be significantly worse than the previous Olympics.
I don't think they've done anywhere near as good a job of preparation as London.

New Zealand Olympian Jason Lee ‘kidnapped by police’ in Rio de Janeiro

ZEALAND athlete says he was kidnapped and forced to withdraw cash from ATMs by men dressed in police uniforms in Rio de Janeiro.

Jiu-Jitsu athlete Jason Lee took to social media to confirm the news.

“What did you guys get up to yesterday? I got kidnapped. Go Olympics! #Rio2016,” he tweeted.

In a more detailed post on his Facebook page, Lee claims the men threatened to apprehend him if he did not meet his demands for “a large sum of money.

“I’m not sure what’s more depressing, the fact this stuff is happening to foreigners so close to the Olympic Games or the fact that Brazilians have to live in a society that enables this absolute bullshit on a daily basis,” he wrote.

“I was threatened with arrest if I did not get in their private car and accompany them to two ATMs to withdraw a large sum of money for a bribe.

“This place is well and truly strawberry floated in every sense of the word imaginable.”

Lee’s partner, New Zealand journalist Laura McQuillian, later tweeted: “Boyfriend was accosted by Policia Militar cops who drove him to two ATMs and forced him to withdraw cas #roadtoRio.

Russians not being banned outright negate any watching of track and field.

I think this will probably all go off without much of a hitch, despite the farcical build-up. Part of me hopes it goes drastically wrong though just to teach the IOC a lesson.

The Athletics ban still stands, though.

I do think it seems a little harsh. Yes she partook in the doping regime but says she was left with no alternative and she was the one that blew the lid off of the operation leading to where we are now. A bit of gratitude wouldn't go amiss, let her compete as a neutral without representing a country.

The IOC ruled that she should not be allowed to take part as she had previously failed a doping test.

Stepanova said the IOC decision was "based on wrong and untrue statements".

So did she or didn't she fail a doping test? I'd be the first to stick the boot into the joke that is the IOC, but I've no problem with proven cheaters being banned.

She might have been a whistleblower but:

But the IOC ruled that she should not be allowed to take part as she had previously failed a doping test.

I don’t think we can have a situation where you are forgiven for doping just because you grassed up some other people that were also doping.

Not specifically to do with the Olympics but apparently Bernie Ecclestone's MIL has been kidnapped in Brazil:

I do worry about what is going to start happening when the Olympics actually start.

The problem with the Olympics is that only one city hosts it. So all the police resources will be focused on Rio unlike the World Cup. Meaning crime will spiral out of control in places like Sao Paulo. As someone who has been to Sao Paulo for a conference for a week.. the place is a dump. Never been so glad to leave a city!

São Paulo is a host city for some of the football, though, along with Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Manaus, and Salvador.

Fair enough. But the main focus will be on Rio not too far away from Sao Paulo.

Oh yeah, that's for certain, but if São Paulo and others are host to teams of athletes, and have nothing like the security presence of Rio itself, they're likely to become targets. It's seriously worrying already, and it's not even started yet.

An Olympic Charter bye-law states only approved sponsors may reference "Olympic-related terms" from 27 July until midnight on 24 August.

That includes words such as "victory", "performance", "effort" and "2016".
