Used to love GT from 2003-2007 or so, before I switched to YouTube for most all my video stuff. What a shame. :(

I know

You know he would be valuable to countless marketing and advertising companies and could probably earn a heap more than he was day to day with GT. Like he said though, it's good in a way someone else ended it because he never would have as he enjoyed it so much

Good write up by Jim Sterling.

Makes you wonder who's next, Videogamer surely can't be too far behind. It really is depressing having these community led groups pushing out original content falling by the wayside whilst some of the wanky gooseberry fool Youtubers put out there draws in millions which they push their promoted content to.

Today has been gooseberry fool.

Jim dropping truth bombs again, i expect next week's jimquisition to be all about this.

Its really strawberry floating sad to see more and more sites that produce actually good and interesting editorial content being axed while open sewers like polygon and kotaku are still going. I guess they play by that buzzfeed model of short, sponsored bullshit that keeps the execs happy regardless of quality. I'm sad about gametrailers, but if videogamer went i'd move from sad to incandescent with rage.

If you want a vision of the future, check out this list of our top 5 youtubers screeching like developmentally-challenged lemurs onto the internet, forever. Number #3 will shock you.

I think I would riot if Videogamer closed shop.

Does this news make any of you feel more compelled to support sites that you visit?

I bought a Giant Bomb membership during the sale over Christmas and will sign up to the Video Gamer patreon later today.

Why? At least they try to do something different. Without them and sites like Videogamer, Giantbomb and what GT was doing in their latter years all we're left with are corporate sockpuppets like IGN, pumping out dry press releases as news. I couldn't tell you the name or other piece of identifying information about any of the writers at IGN, Gamespot or Eurogamer.

I had no idea they were struggling. This is absolutely awful news to wake up to. :(

I watch Gametrailers regularly, and Love a whole bunch of the shows they put out. There's an obvious passion fir games there, and their coverage of the major press conferences is unparalleled. Huber is great, love me a Countdown too. Pop Fiction is one of the best online show formats full stop as far as I am concerned, and their investigations into some of gamings greatest myths and getting closure on them were gamer heaven.

I'm most saddened for Kyle Bosman though. He is the best games reporter bar none, He just absolutely gets it. I'm gonna miss his show hugely.

Their content has been strong over a huge number of years, and helped Screwattack and Mega64 get traction too. Urgh. Awful, awful news. :(

What a strange attitude. "I don't personally like it and so it should close down and everyone should lose their job". :fp:

I'll miss Pop Fiction but like someone else said there hadn't been one in while.

It's sad that so many sites have fallen over the last ten years. Publishers and platform holders just don't see the point in having games media cover their games anymore, since the dawn of the Nintendo Direct the writing for traditional games media was on the wall, just as the internet killed magazines.

EA aren't going to E3, this saves them millions of dollars, just to get the games media to play their games, EA Play is open to gamers as well as press and that is the key, get the games to the gamers. You don't need the middle man anymore, places like Kinda Funny have shown that you create content and your fans will pay to see it, maybe not getting paid as much as you would working in a corporate environment but still that is an avenue. Meanwhile publishers and platform holders can go directly to the audience with their games and message and completely bypass the games media, which to be honest is a good thing, games media were always fed PR and not until a game was reviewed would you truly see what people thought of a game, now though we have people all over the world from all walks of life showing us what they really think of games away from the PR machine and I am finding more and more places and people who can give me an opinion than ever before.

As a gamer and consumer this is actually working much better for me.

Sure it is terrible when people lose their jobs, but if they are really and truly passionate about games and want to provide content for gamers there are ways they can do that and get paid, it's not the traditional way to do it but things change, you have to adapt or you are done. The GT guys and gals are very likable and I am sure they will be back with their own thing and Patreon support.

One thing that will never go away is written reviews, there will always be a need to see something in writing, I don't have time at work to watch a review, but I do have time to read reviews.

Yes absolutely. I don't use Adblock for what it's worth, very little apparently. I had no idea about how much damage YouTube does, if I did I would have viewed everything on their site, I hadn't been on it for months other than to check out the new design. Also if I knew things were this bad I definitely would have been a paid subscriber to their twitch content as I watched hours and hours of that stuff.

I hope they turn up on Patreon somehow if only I can give them some money that I feel I owe

Well, I appreciate what they are doing I suppose, IGN and Eurogamer have relatively poor online shows, I just find Videogamer's humour out of date, old school FHM bantz for the ladz, featuring many cock jokes, fat jokes, sexist jokes, oi oi jokes and little intelligence and/or substance. The site seems to pride itself on being a troll and for some that's great, its just not for me. I actually found GT to be just as boring and bad as IGN and the rest, very little in way of originality which admittedly Videogamer has.

I find solace that OutsideXbox which has wit, charm and intelligence in equal measure has 10 times the amount of subs Videogamer has. They play all platforms also but I think are subsidized a little bit by MS.

Xbox Xbox Xbox!

Outside Xbox has been strawberry floating gash since mrpointyhead left.

The only show I'll bother with is Danny O'Dwyer's The Point on GameSpot. Damn I hope The Final Bosman finds a new home :(

Are there two Videogamer sites out there? It's like you're describing the evil twin of the channel I'm subscribed to.

I also watch Ian Higton's Platform 32 regularly but he only has 24k subs!

Outside Xbox are currently doing a series about FarCry Primal on PS4...so pipe down ted. Plus they regularly call out bloodborne and The Last of us as fave games, you obviously haven't watched it in a while. a long while cos Mr Pointyhead left 2 years ago.

I was going to avoid going after the whole xbox thing as it's an easy target, but I've watched outsidexbox a few times, and to me its as inane and boring as all the rest with unironic list videos everywhere. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
