Roblox. What is it? Should I let my kids play it?

Anything to do with games at all.

Can someone give me a quick Roblox rundown?

My 8 year old has been banging on about it but I'm not sure how safe/appropriate it is for kids.

Can it be locked down to stop interacting with randoms?

I’ve told my kids they’ll never be allowed to play it. Too many stories in the press of it being used by pervs etc

Remember when we knew all about the hip new games young people played, because we were they?

Ella plays it and has done since she was 9. It's a collective of games made by other people. One of the games she seems to love is one where your character gets turned into a cake.

I never let her add "friends" on it unless it was her friends from school or her cousins, which are the only people I let her talk to on it, and she has to tell me if someone is trying to talk to her that she doesn't know.

My kid is 18 now so plays whatever she wants but this is very very much what I was like with my kid when she was that age... I was going to type a comment in here othering suggestions of how to let a kid play it but not put them at much risk but id just say be like Tsunade shes got it right.

I used to work in a Nursery and youd be amazed how many 4 year olds come in talking about playing call of duty etc

Thanks for the replies! I think I'll download it and take a look at what controls it has then take it from there. I'm not massively worried but anything with user generated content and where randos can talk to you seems like a potential minefield!

It always amazes me when playing R6 siege and you hear people who seem super young start talking via open voice chat.
I think some parents need to be a little more cautious.

I remember when I worked at Wollies and the few times I bothered going anywhere near the shop floor we had people arguing about age restrictions on games.
How dare you not sell my 10 year old son an 18 rated game!!!!!!!!

It was impossible to reason with them and was depressing as hell.

My kids used to play it. As others have said as long as you monitor their friends list they'll be fine.

my 9 year old sister downloaded it on the ipad the other day without asking me or our parents
she says she only talks to her school friends on it and not strangers, but I'm pretty uncomfortable with that because it's all user generated content anyway and there's no accounting for what sort of RP stuff can go on

My nieces showed me this yesterday, they seemed to love it but honestly it looked gooseberry fool! Maybe my expectations are too high, i mean at their age I was on a NES playing super mario and duck hunt

PLAY | Final Fantasy VII Rebirth [92h]
WATCH | Ted Lasso S2, HiJack S1, The Apprentice S18
RACE | Westonbirt Half (March), Chew Valley 10k (June), GNR (Sept), Cardiff Half (Oct)

It's like letting your kids play in the Hitler Youth, which isn't some frivolous invocation of Godwin's Law but an actual reference to fascist roleplay in Roblox!

But also this  Got to feel sorry for kids spending their childhood playing this and not actual good games

Thankfully they all realised that it was gooseberry fool within minutes of being allowed on the thing so problem solved! :toot:

My daughter played this briefly until I walked in and she was in tears because she as in a game that bully one person randomly and they picked on her. Calmed her down, deleted it and she's never touched it since plus now she plays ACTUAL games.

My 4yo loves to watch CookieSwirlC play Roblox (insert staccato Youtuber scream here) and has asked me a couple of times to let him play it. I said I'd look into it but I don't think I will for a few years yet at least. Today we played a bit of Crazy Taxi and Tony Hawk together so Roblox can strawberry float off :toot:

My oldest nephew (5) recently told me that he plays Squid Game at his dad's, turns out he was referring to Roblox. :dread: If that's the extent of user generated content in this, I can see why parents might be concerned.

I used to let my son play Assassins Creed. Luckily I never told him the name of the game, so he could tell people at nursery/school, he just called it "the man with the bird game".

Which, after typing it, sounds worse. :dread:
