I remember when it started and was hyped as strawberry float. The first series was proper amateur though - Roadblock and Killetron were made from roadsigns and bin lids:

It was better when it started, though. They used to have the Gaunlet and stuff to test the robots in ways other than just all-out brawls (I never liked how destructive they got in later seasons, the housebots started to seem uneccessarily cruel considering how much work the teams would have put into their robots).

It all went downhill when they introduced Refbot, the prat.

I always thought Mortis was one of the coolest. Even though the Asian guy on the team was a complete tool.

I always thought Matilda was one of the least effective house bots - the tusks didn't have much lift and either the chainsaw or grinder only seemed to make lots of sparks rather than be dangerous.

Did a contestant ever manage to take down a house robot?

Can't remember who but I swear one robot managed to flip Sir Killalot on its side.

does anyone know what some of the best robots were from the american version of the show. There was one that was like a ball with a large cutting disc. UK one obviously was the best though.

Does this mean the end of Jonathan Pearce on Match of the Day?

Brilliant news. I was thinking about this show the other day, that first Hypnodisc appearance was just brutal.

I always had a soft spot for Firestorm. Also quite liked Gemini for being able to split into two.

Nothing beats Razer for me, it was the Brock Lesnar of Robot Wars

I always hated Hypnodisk, I guess there's real ingenuity in their design but I always thought it was an inelegant brute force road to winning. Like what's the least amount of effort to maximum reward way of winning Robot Wars, seemed to forgo the sport and fun of the competition.

Never was a huge fan of Razer to be go I think I'd started to go off the show by that stage. I always remember it breaking down and being a bit gooseberry fool as well.

I thought Hypnodisc and Razer were brilliant. I think I just liked seeing the opponents robot getting smashed up, and those two could deal damage. Plus they were quite unique designs, it made a more interesting watch than all the wedge/flipper robots.

Also, Craig Charles says:

Definitely need to get someone with humongous norks to awkwardly interview the nerds while they clutch their spanners.

Depends what you mean by gooseberry fool. In terms of results and win percentage, it's the best robot in the history of the show.

I loved Robot Wars. I only lost interest when the tournament structure seemed to die, and dissolve into a series of 'grudge matches'.

So many good memories. Cassius was the first 'holy gooseberry fool' robot and I'm still a little gutted it never won. What about Gemini the clusterbot?

Hypnodisc, Pussycat, Chaos 2 and Razer were something else.

Excited to see what they do with it.

Think how much technology has moved on since it last aired.

Fighting drones round is coming people.
