It’s just a combination of jumping, then performing the dash/boosting in mid air. No need for XP levelling.

It's worth giving the training modes a go, at the very least do the basic + advanced tutorials. Goalie, Striker and Aerial are great for practising a lot of the trickier shots, and today I just discovered the 'custom training' option where you can try setups made by other players.

I would like to play some rocket league some time with people. I'm on PC.

Thanks, guys - I’ll give the training a go - and I guess that learn-by-playing will have a role here, too. One guy I played (“Expert” level) had some kind of demon that appeared in the goal whenever he scored .

I did a load of it a while ago and got tolerable but seem to have forgotten everything. Ended up mostly going in circles going "where the strawberry float did the ball go"

It does seem like it's gonna take a while to perfect the moves... my goal tally wasn't exactly enormous. Top fun, though!

I know that feeling. I've never played before so I completed the training then joined and I was shite. I thought Captain Kil might have wanted to kill me

I did manage four goals I'm pretty sure they were pity goals though

Turn on ball cam

It's my default way of playing, only really toggle it off if the ball goes high directly above me

I gave that a go it is very odd, I think it helped a bit but takes some getting used to
