GRdiscusses: Roguelikes/lites - What are your thoughts of this genre?

Big bump for this topic but I thought it would be fun to revisit after Hades swept many GOTY awards last year and we see the launch of Returnal a few months ago!

Since posting this topic I’ve actually really warmed to the genre, I played a ton of Dead Cells last year and plan to go back to it again soon. I also spent a ton of time playing Minecraft Dungeons this year which has some elements of the genre in that you replay levels to get better gear to then beat the levels on hard difficulty settings.

I personally still need to pick up Hades soon on Switch but I’m also waiting for the 2 Spelunky games to hit Switch this summer.

Hades is a masterpiece. It's narrative doesn't just justify the roguelite setup, the two elevate each other. The game addresses almost every complaint levelled at the genre short of changing genre completely. The amount of choice it gives the player on every run is liberating, the permanent progression reinforces progression in the sense of improving as a player, and the overall narrative and character relationships give a constant reason to keep playing and take another run.

I really want to play Returnal but I'm waiting on a price drop to something more reasonable.
