Hopefully it isn't as nails as their Nioh games

Here at Team NINJA, we are incredibly excited to introduce our very latest action RPG game, which takes you on an epic and unfettered journey as a Ronin at the dawn of a new era in Japan. It was seven years ago when we first began this project. And since then, the development has progressed slowly and freely, much like the spirit of a Ronin. It is with great pleasure to finally bring this title to light, and we are filled with gratitude on being able to make this announcement with PlayStation who have supported us and this project throughout these many years.

Rise of the Ronin is a combat focused open-world action RPG that takes place in Japan at a time of great change. It is the very end of a 300-year long Edo Period, commonly known as “Bakumatsu.” Set in the late 19th century, Japan is facing the darkest of times as it struggles with its oppressive rulers and deadly diseases while western influence permeates as civil war continues to rage between the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Anti-Shogunate factions.

Here in this time of mayhem, you embody a Ronin character, a warrior bound to no master and free to make choices of its own. Rise of the Ronin is a new Team NINJA experience that will immerse you in an historically inspired world while bringing together its renowned combat action with Katanas and the likes, with new firearm weaponry that depicts the unique personality of its time period.

We at Koei Tecmo, have had many titles in the past that were based on history. But with Rise of the Ronin, we set out to take the next big step. By harnessing all the skills and knowledge we’ve gained over the years we really wanted to take things to the next level by attempting to thoroughly portray the most critical revolution in the history of Japan including the darkest and ugliest chapters that many will shy away from. This is undoubtedly the most ambitious and challenging project for Team NINJA Studio to date. Yet we will allow our experience in creating samurai and ninja action games to guide us through this journey.

Beyond the action elements, we will be steadfast in our efforts to create a multilayered story that showcases the world of the Bakumatsu period and the revolution that took place. The characters that you will meet all have their own brand of justice and motivations, and whether you decided to side with or against them… each decision you make will matter. With new combat action and unrestrained open gameplay, we are looking forward to setting you free as you immerse yourself as a Ronin.

Looks great, a shame about the 2024 launch hopefully it doesn't clash with the Assassin's Creed Japan game, don't think I can stomach two open world Japanese themed games in one year.

PREDICTION: This game will be much better than Assassin's Creed Japan.

Come back in 2 years to see if I was right.

I really need to get on an properly play the Nioh games, pretty sure I own both of them but I've barely touched either.

I do like the look of this, just such a shame we've got over a year to wait. What "big hitters" have Sony actually got coming out next year?

I thought this looked good although I suspect it'll be tough as nails! I got a Sekiro vibe whilst watching.

I thought it looked really bad. It just made me think about how much I like GoT, and how this just looked like a cheap version of it.

My mate had it in his head that they were going to show Ghost of Tsushima 2 and thought this was it and started texted me asking why it looked so bad :slol:

Nioh 1&2 were basically a cheap version of Dark Souls, like a dated, prior-gen version of it, but it was brilliant.

I wasn’t looking to get this any time soon but the trailer has me excited. I’m just looking at it and picturing doing all this with Nioh’s combat, or a close approximation of it, and that sounds strawberry floatin great

Honestly, it didn't look great. I was tempted to buy a PS5 for this when it was first announced but the trailer made me glad that I held off. I know it's not fair to compare it to GoT and not all samurai games need to aim for that but it did feel a bit like a poorer version of GoT with some Sekiro style game play thrown in. There was little in that trailer that made me think "yeah, this is a big step above PS4". Disappointing but it has saved me £400+ so there's that

Please do not post this in the "No Context" thread

I don’t believe this one is, no. I’m more meaning from the perspective of “this team with stellar combat expertise are now stretching their legs in this new, additional direction”, rather than it being “Nioh but also Assassin’s Creed”.

Everything in the trailer they’re showing of the moment to moment gameplay looks like it will be a lot of fun to play. The traversal, that pop-out-of-glide-to-mount-horse move, the hitstop on block, the classic 3-stance combat, mid-combo weapon switching. It’s looking like it’s shaping up to be another banger from the team.

It already seems like this game is going to suffer based on not having the shiniest graphics. Look past that and I agree with Jiggles, it looks fun!

It looked very bland to me, just a sparsely populated generic open world.

Reviews out for this in the morning. Famitsu have gone early with 37/40, which is, interestingly, higher than they gave Nioh 2 but it’s Famitsu, like.

Look, I’m not saying I’m guaranteeing this is going to be another 88+ MC hit, but I did preorder it over a month in advance on blind faith and I’m currently on a streak where like the last 7 games I’ve done that with turned out to greater-than-expected critical acclaim.

Pre ordered along with Dragons Dogma 2. Should be good. Also hopefully a lot easier than Nioh 2.

Wish my image sig would work

With SoK not about since August, is it possible to get control of the OP to adjust the title etc or would it be better to just make a new thread saying as this one is so short as it is
