Also, Biggar hitting the post from 15m out was hilarious. I've never been in a stadium that size and actually heard the posts ring like that before. I'd put money on the lad from Cardiff sat behind me, who fell asleep in the second half because he was jet lagged after arriving at 8 this morning, being able to make that kick.

He's one of the best kickers at the tournament, maybe the best, and to do that on his first kick of the tournament :slol:

Probably the best game in the pool to get the nervey miskick out of the system, but strawberry floating hell. World class kicker ballsing up an absolute basic training ground kick like that? Jenks should have slapped him round the ears before leaving the pitch.

Depends how you look at it.

An optimist would say Fiji were the only team who threatened Wales for 2nd spot and now they won't get it.

A pessimist would say, Fiji & Uruguay could be dangerous for Wales (& Aus just Uruguay).

But it's most likely the former.

North America got thoroughly shat on today.

It's strange out here, at times you could be forgiven for not even realising the World Cup is on, let alone even happening in Japan. Very few bars have a TV, even fewer showing sports. If you want to be guaranteed you can watch a game, you need to find an Irish bar. The channel screening the games here appears to be a premium one (though I may be wrong) so only one hotel we've stayed in actually had games on the TV in the room. If it weren't for the train stations being full of Europeans and Australasians, even in the host cities, I think you'd easily have the tournament pass you by, unless you're one of the unfortunate Japanese commuters trapped on a train heading to a game. There's more 2020 Olympics promotion visible here than there is for the World Cup.

People do seem to be aware of it, though. Plenty of locals who've been kind enough to try and practice their English with us, (read: save us from disaster in restaurants where we can't read the menu or communicate with the staff,) have asked if we're here for the World Cup, so it can't be a total mystery.

Solid win for England.

Good to see Uruguary win the other day as well. While it was a good move for Argentina moving into the Tri Nations, I always thought that some kind of American tournament with Canada, USA, Uruguay, and Argentina would have been good.

That competition exists, its called the Americas Rugby Championship, Argentina send a second string XV and they still dominate it.

Theres also the Pacific Nations Cup, its a little more competitive.

In general these second tier tournaments dont get the attention they should, theres a whole bunch of them all around the world and they can be quite entertaining. Theres a whole structure of tournaments under the 6 Nations with promotion and relegation as well. All these things should get more promotion and attention to be honest, more rugby is a good thing.

It's difficult with the lack of money and resources for those teams, and the relative lack of interest in watching them play too.
More teams playing and great competition is always good, it's just easier said than done.

It is easier said than done, no doubt about that but every decision rugby has made lately has been to bring in more money, not to grow the game or expand its reach. The Pro 14 has teams in South Africa, the 6 Nations wont allow promotion and relegation, France get the 2023 World Cup, 6 Nations and Gallagher Premiership have some stakes to a private equity firm, every one of these was only done so they profits would go up. Even the suggested plans for the future of rugby are all money grabs, the nations league (a way for southern hemisphere teams to get northern hemisphere cash), Top 14 expanding to 16, Pro 14 expanding to the US, the Heninken Cup being replaced by the uh Heineken Cup, every single plan is for money, not the growth of the game.

Yes the tier 2 nations need a lot of help but siloing them off and only letting them play the big boys every 4 years is not the answer. Give them a shot more often, everyone likes an upset and some tier 1 nations having to trek to Georgia or Japan or the Pacific Islands to play a game wouldnt be the worst thing that ever happened.

What a game and what a result. That was no fluke, Japan were much better than Ireland in every area. Japan has to fancy their chances of making the Quarter-Finals now, and maybe even topping the group, especially considering Scotland only has the 4 day turnaround before their game with Japan.

Absolutely fantastic match. The way Japan just recycle quick ball is so attractive to watch. Ireland had no answer to it. Amazing.
