Rubbish. :(

Although at least those 2 fixtures haven't determined any qualifications, (realistically at least, an Italian bonus point win might have seen them finish second over South Africa, I think?) but if the Scotland V Japan match gets called off, there'll be an uproar.

Edit: Can't wait for a quarter final against a very well rested France. :|

BBC Sport seemed to suggest there was the possibility the Japan-Scotland game might take place on Monday, or even behind closed doors.

The conspiracy theorist in me wonders how desperate the Japanese will be to play the game. Scotland demolished Russia and are a team that could easily best them should they show up. I'm not a die-hard rugby fan, but they always seem to be inconsistent and just as they might get beat by Italy in the Six Nations, they can then just as easily pump themselves up and best England to deny them a Grand Slam.

And there's no reason why they shouldn't be absolutely pumped up for the Japan game.

So glad they chose to have the tournament in a location with a predictable typhoon season. :fp:

To be fair it's still Unusual.

The fierce tropical storm, predicted to be one of the most violent to hit the region in recent years, is expected to strike the Tokyo area this weekend.

Yeah it’s certainly a big one, but a degree of disruption is pretty much guaranteed statistically so it was always a risk factor. Really surprised they hadn’t put better contingency plans in place rather than just cancelling games.

Yes cancelling games is really weird.

This summer here (and last summer) have been unusually hot, so that might have prolonged the typhoon season or affected its intensity. It's not normally been this hot in October and it's felt like quite a long summer. We have had record high temperatures the past two years too.

There are normally typhoons this time of year though - I was coming back from abroad the last week of September in 2018 and I know Osaka airport got battered by one about three weeks before I flew and then I had to get a much earlier train the day I flew back in to try and race an approaching typhoon again.

They don't tend to be *that* disruptive, often just bringing heavier wind and rain. This one is going to make landfall smack back in the middle of Honshu, the main island and basically that stretch of land between Osaka/Kyoto and Tokyo is the main belt of the country in terms of population, urban build up, infrastructe etc. So it's going to disrupt a lot of stuff.

It's hard to say when exactly they could have held it in Japan though. Summer is as hot as balls here and surely would make it suffer as a spectacle, as well as be pretty unbearable for tourists. May/June is the rainy season as well, with Spring obviously interfering with the Six Nations. Not sure when they could have held it other than now.

Its an absolute shambles. New Zealand, France and England all get an extra week to rest and prepare for their QFs, the tournament is unblanced enough with short weeks and long rests depending on your schedule, this just dials that nonsense up to 11.

They have been unlucky with the severity of the weather but they should still have had a proper plan in place to deal with what could have happened - that's part of what major event planning is supposed to be all about!

The 2002 football World Cup was held in Japan and South Korea across May and June of that year and that worked out pretty well - I don't recall there being too many issues with either temperatures or rain.

That’s just the country of Scotland to be honest. Eternal underdog, best in the world at “glorious” failure.

I can't speak for the others but I doubt it will make a difference to England, we've been poor on the whole throughout.

Regardless of form England will spend this weekend with their feet up relaxing, Australia and Wales will be out there gettign smashed around. Even rotating the squad wont mitigate it fully, England players will be betered rested and recovered than their opponents.

Wales might not have so many concerns if they could stop taking out their own team mates. ;)

I reckon Australia could play today, then play England tomorrow and still win.

The problem with England is they always try to walk it in.

That and they constantly strawberry float up any flow by giving away stupid and needless penalties.

Wales often come in cold when they've had a long break between games, so I actually think having an extra long break could have hurt us rather than helped us in some ways. Of course it does help that our game this weekend is Uruguay and I'm expecting us to field a largely second-string team. My view might be different if we had to play a high intensity game against Australia this weekend while England/France had the week off.

England aren't going to complain about a week off, but I do think they could have used another test going into the knockouts. They went from having the hardest schedule going in to the quarter-finals in Argentina and France, to one of the easiest (14-man Argentina for most of the game, and a week off).

AB's v Italy is a shame-that Italian frontrower doesn't get its' send off.

England France-sucks for the fans but I don't think any of the 4 teams affected in the QF will be that bothered, and England and Wales will be quietly pleased I suspect.

I feel sorry for Namibia and Canada. Their whole WC is that game. They've got through the whippings from the tier 1 sides and now they don't get to play their game.

The real issue is Japan v Scotland though, it will be an utter farce if qualification (and not just QF positioning) is decided by a cancelled fixture.

In other news, New Zealand’s record of winning every pool match ever at the RWC has been ended by Italy with a 0-0 draw.

It would obviously be terrible for Scotland if the game gets called off, but I also think it would be bad for Japan, even though it would guarantee their qualification. They have a real chance to make the quarter-finals through merit, if this game gets called off then this will always hang over the achievement.

I thought this one was still going ahead? It's in Kamishi, so a long way from where the typhoon is expected to cause trouble.
