Yeah there are so many games that I'd be interesting in buying, but the lack of a demo puts me off. Not going to spend £30-40 on something that might turn out to be crap. I get the arguments about putting people off games, but for me, the opposite is definitely true.

There were loads of games on the PlayStation that I probably wouldn't have bought, but then I played the demo and became hooked. OPM was great for me in this respect, and it was very well-written compared to some other magazines. It had a much more 'serious' tone compared to some others too, which wasn't a bad thing, but when I was younger I was probably less interested in reading all of it, like I would've done with something like N64 magazine.

Shame it's come to an end though, was a great magazine overall, especially in the glory days of the PS1.

Future have put a sampler edition of Play up: https://issuu.com/futurepublishing/docs/psm01.issuu

Does indeed appear to be identical to OPM on the inside. Interesting that the web address however now refers to "PSM".

I wonder what ultimately made them settle on the Play branding over PSM, PSW or even PlayStation Power. Essential PlayStation was another one, which was essentially a rebadged OPM give or a take a few additional articles, and the scoring altered to a star system.

Is anyone a subscriber and received a copy yet? I'd be quite interested if it went further down the retro route OPM was moving. Much as I love Retro Gamer, at least 50% of any issue is devoted to titles way beyond my own history with games.

Those were the days. The only way these magazines could survive is if they had exclusive demos. Obviously this won't happen due to the cost of making a demo and the lack of subscriber numbers. I have kept quite a few of my EDGE magazines from the past, however chucked away my CVG. I even had a few letters/ emails published towards the end.
