Targeting 60fps at 1080p on Switch. I will surprised if it maintains a solid 60fps at that resolution. There were some framedrops during the Vorkken fights.

Third announcement;

Now, Platinum has also revealed that its third “Platinum4” announcement isn’t a new game, but a new studio.

While PlatinumGames’ main studio is in Osaka, Japan, this new studio is being set up in Tokyo and will begin operations April 2020. In addition to being involved with Project G.G., the Tokyo studio will also explore the possibility of developing “console live ops game development,” referring to games as a service.

PlatinumGames CEO Kenichi Sato states: “In December 2019, PlatinumGames entered into a capital alliance with Tencent Holdings. This allowed us to start work on Project G.G., our first entirely original IP, in earnest. It also contributed to our decision to establish PlatinumGames Tokyo – a pillar of our new commitment to building our power as a developer. Between our Osaka office and PlatinumGames Tokyo, we’re poised to make use of the sharpest creative minds in games in both west and east Japan, and expand to even greater possibilities.”

Happy to see Platinum expanding, the 4th and final announcement may be different also as Inaba (Studio head) has said that the last announcement will "be very interesting"

Seen some off screen footage of the Switch version. I hope you can turn parts of the HUD off. The screen representing the Wii U gamepad is strawberry floating gigantic, and it's not really needed for like 95% of the gameplay in the game.

Platinum have said that aim of the Kickstarter for The Wonderful 101 was not to raise funds but to gauge interest for the game. I guess that many people suspected this with the Switch version arriving so soon after the Kickstarter launched.

PlatinumGames' Atsushi Inaba wrote: First off, the money is going towards the production of all the goods—I don’t know if you’ve seen all the tiers and their rewards, but those cost money to produce. The rest of the money is going towards the additional content that will be added to the game. All that costs money, and it takes time and work to port the game to the additional platforms. I want to clarify that we didn’t do the campaign to ‘get money’ or anything like that—that wasn’t the point of it. The main goal was to bring the fans together, gauge interest, and find a good way to revisit and release the game.

I'm not certain about my thinking on this. All Kickstarter backers will be getting the stuff they wanted, but it also feels a bit off that a developer - fresh from recent funding from the giant TenCent (although apparently that money isn't being used for this project) - has used Kickstarter in this way.

What do you think? Has Platinum done nothing wrong here? Or have they gone against the spirit of Kickstarter?

The funding from Tencent will be have specific conditions around its’ use to be fair, it’s not like they were given a lump of money that they can take and do with what they want.

I personally don’t see the issue. It’s not like they have taken anything away from other Kickstarter projects-backers would buy the game either way.

I don't see an issue. There have been plenty of times people have said they'd buy a game when asked, but when the time came they didn't. Getting people to put their money where their mouth is is always the truest test of interest. And they only asked for like $50k.

Everyone knows what they're putting money in for, so I'm happy enough with it.

Exactly. I can't see how anyone has lost out, people just seem upset that it doesn't fit the criteria of projects they think kickstarter should be used for.

I think that could be the little niggle that I feel about the situation, Tom. In my mind I think of Kickstarter as being focused on smaller businesses trying to get an idea off the ground; they need funding in order to deliver their vision. Platinum appears to have practically finished the vast bulk of the game development before launching the Kickstarter; with the money received (sure, they asked for £50k but have so far gained £1.5m) feeling more like a pre-order scheme than development funding.

I think it's fantastic that The Wonderful 101 is releasing on new platforms and supporters of the Kickstarter project are receiving what they want, but I just wonder if the success of this Kickstarter could cause other developers to try their hand at the idea. In my mind - and maybe I'm wrong! - Kickstarter isn't really designed to be used in this way; it's not a pre-order / advertising platform.

I still can't see why that would be an issue though? Nobody suffers from that. If anything it drives traffic to the site and if people have enjoyable experiences with more reliable devs like Platinum, they might be included to use Kickstarter more, benefiting the smaller devs. There's not a finite amount of Kickstarter resource being used up here.

It just kinda feels that Platinum has used the platform as a pre-order and advertising scheme rather than for getting a project off the ground. Maybe there is nothing wrong with this approach (everyone signing up is happy!) but it does seem - to my knowledge of Kickstarter - unusual.

Not worried about the Kickstarter use.

Preorders don't appear to be up beyond GAME. I want to get the Switch version.
