There are rumours that Discord could soon be bought out; with Microsoft named as the front-runner and a cost of $10bn being quoted by Bloomberg. Alternatively, others suggest that Discord could choose to become a publicly listed company.

Is Microsoft gonna buy up everything to do with videogames?!? .

After their great success with Beam/Mixer, why not?

Uuuuuuuuuuurgh. Not specifically at MS (although if it stops working on Apple hardware I’ll not be pleased) but at the public listing in general.

I hope to god this is false because Microsoft destroy every good bit of software they touch.

I still don't get discord. I've got access to a few different servers largely through patreons I support, but it feels like being added to hundreds of group WhatsApp chats all at once, so I just turned off notifications and now I never use it again.

I also dont get discord. i find the channels incredibly confusing to navigate, and never know how many levels in to the system i am. I guess the voice chat is good if playing cross platform with strangers, but if you are with friends i would imagine that you could just use whatsapp and it would be the same?

Yeah everything but the surface level of Discord confuses me greatly. I suspect it is all relatively simple in reality but I simply don't have the time to investigate and work out how these things operate now.

Basically I'm now old and out of touch.

I haven't a notion about how Discord works either, it's confusing AF. If Xbox unify it with Xbox accounts for easy cross play with PC then it's a plus.

Never, ever try Slack.

Or trello.

Or...any other group/team management service?

I'm saying that Discord is super streamlined and easy to use. Seriously, it's ace.

Thanks guys, I find this really reassuring. I honestly thought it was just me who found it confusing.

I'm cetainly old, but what worries me is that it seems to have a flow not dissimilar to MS Teams, which i am going to have start using in the near future :fp:

i also groaned when seeing this, but if Discord are looking at selling I'd rather Microsoft go for them over facebook :dread:

Discord is essentially just chat room software. You join a chat server and it has rooms for different subjects in. It's not too complicated.

It's popular with teens and students at the moment, in the way that IRC was back in our day. Fandom communities used to have an IRC channel, now they'll have a Discord server.

I think we are generally all a bit too busy on this forum to really be "into" real-time chat internet communities though. I keep an eye on the GRcade one but that's about it.

I've only used Discord as an app on iOS and it's layout is...well to me... a mess.

Hey this seems like a good thread to plug the GR discord in. You can meet people for games, and hang out and chat during the work day or on your phone. We also have tag groups so you can find someone to game with. It's also great for cross platform play.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:
