Best played on PC if you have them, 2nd one is £4 odd on CDKeys. Not locked to 30fps, higher framerates with ReShades and it looks and runs beautifully.

Gematsu has also separately heard that a Dead Space revival is in the works at Motive, which is said to be a reimagining rather than a sequel to the existing trilogy.

I'm....mixed on it being a reimagining (So basically a reboot then) rather than continuing on from 3.
I mean I can understand why after it's been so long and newcomers would basically be completely lost, but it does make me think that the story will never actually be concluded if we just reboot and end up getting to the same point before EA just go "strawberry float it" and move on to something more GaaS because Dead Space isn't a continuous revenue stream between releases.

Reimagining could mean that it’s simply a story in the same universe. The games absolutely do not need any sort of remaster treatment, still look great now.

This is a great shout.

Preferably if it's more in the slower paced survival horror like the first one, I think VR would be terrifying for that

Dead Space Extraction was an on rails shooting gallery type game but I don't think it ever came to VR.

I absolutely loved Dead Space (bloody Dark Souls stealing the abbreviation!). Only played a bit of the second one and had heard it was a bit of a downward slope in terms of quality but from people's reviews I should actually play it! An I right in thinking if you're on PC you get to use a mouse for that god awful asteroid sequence? If so I'd totally recommend PC because it was a nightmare :dread:

That meteor section is one of the largest difficulty spikes in any game I've encountered.

Dead Space Extraction was absolutely amazing, both gameplay and story wise.
One of my favourite games on the Wii.

For its Dead Space game, Motive is taking notes from Capcom’s recent Resident Evil remakes. Like Resident Evil 2 Remake, expect the next Dead Space to use the original game as a strong foundation. But it should also have modern visuals. And it will likely bring in new gameplay mechanics inspired by other entries in the franchise.

And speaking of Capcom, it is likely a major reason a new Dead Space is happening. While EA has let its horror franchise wither, the Resident Evil series is larger than ever. And Capcom has provided an easy blueprint for EA to follow.

EA has likely also warmed back up to the idea of producing single-player adventures after the success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The publisher has made statements in the recent past about shifting its focus to live-service games. And that was part of a deliberate decision to invest less in single-player experiences following poor results for Mirror’s Edge Catalyst.

It surely can’t be a remake. I refuse to believe it.

Tbh I wouldn't really mind a reboot if it's done well. The ending to 3 was great, but they'd so massacred the lore and characters at that point I can't see them going back to that timeline. Also, the buy in for people who'd never played the first games would be too high maybe.

It's more that EA are so risk averse all they do is follow market trends and hope for the best. What a pathetically cowardly way to exist.

I loved Dead Space.

But for some reason, I can’t get into Dead Space 2. I think it was down to how the sequel looks so high quality glossed bright graphics compared to the gritty, grimy and dark visuals of the original.

Never started DS3.

I love the idea and imagery of the Dead Space games; they're dark and you want to tread carefully. I played the opening hour or two of the first game but had to break away; it was too scary   . I hope to setup my PS3 and give it another go some time, though!

This is a bad take if ever I've seen one

The same company that released stuff like It Takes Two, Mirror's Edge, That bloody dodgeball game, rocket arena, Titanfall, Untangled.

I'm sorry but I don't see how they are risk averse for a big company, Activision and Ubisoft take 10x less risks than EA do.

Cool, thanks. You changed my mind.

It Takes Two - a co-op platformer
Mirror's Edge - over 10 years old, the sequel of which was the reason EA pivoted to live-service games and microtransactions (Inc cancelling Dead Space 4 and disbanding Visceral)
Rocketarena + Beatdown - both developed independently then bought and promoted once they were provably successful
Titanfall - the first was pushed out of the door with no marketing and went on to sell very little. Ditto with the second (which experienced a bump in sales after an associated battle royale became popular, a battle royale for which development on Titanfall 3 was halted). Also they're both FPSs
Untangled - a platformer, but with a funky art style

Naming a bunch of good games doesn't address any of my points. All of the games you mentioned are good, but they fall largely into industry tropes: FPSs, platformers or multiplayer games. Not to mention I was speaking to a specific example: EA being unwilling to green light a SP horror title until someone else did first.

Meanwhile, indie companies are breaking down what games actually are, pushing the ways interactive media can be whether that's through an increased reliance on emotional experiences that speak to deeper themes (If Found, Before I Forget) or utilising mechanics in new and unique ways that often defy genre classification (Loop Hero, Umarangi Generation, Paradise Killer, Return of the Obra Dinn).

I'm not saying big budget or big publisher promoted games cannot be good. I'm saying that a reliance on infinite growth in terms of profit margins as dictated by capitalism stifles innovation by deincentivising risk.

Quick and dirty example: Ubisoft's infamous "we don't make political games". This is a political statement in itself, made off the back of not wanting to alienate demographics that buy their games, because they're constantly focused on that bottom line. A game like If Found, a story about alienation and discrimination revolving around a trans woman, would never be published by them for this reason.

Now... If you did want to talk about a big pub that's bucking the trend somewhat you could've mentioned Microsoft and Gamepass. But...you didn't. Because you just wanted to get a quick dig in, rather than actually engage with the idea.

Tbh, I've seen this mentality consume this forum. Perhaps this isn't the correct place to talk about it, but this place has gone from a collection of people meeting to discuss shared hobbies and experiences to a bunch of arseholes trying to one up each other. I include myself in this as my posting style has absolutely been influenced by the change.

I think the worst example I can think of was the recent Beat a Drugs Test thread where someone asked a reasonable question that obviously related to their mental health and physical well-being only to have half the responses be jokes trying to outdo each other.

It's really strawberry floating depressing, and I regularly find myself wondering why I even bother posting here anymore. Which I'm sure is devastating for all of you.

[Cue jokes about They Always Come Back or some shite]
