It's a bloody good game, I still have a few niggles with the battle system but it's very satisfying once you know figure out how to work with it!

Interested to see how you find it all as a fan of the original

Loving it so far, just started chapter 3. It's the perfect balance of having bits you remember, linked with other stuff that fleshed out static scenes from before with dialogue or fights. The bit where you get surrounded by soldiers before jumping on to the train was so well done, as I didn't realise it was even that part until more and more turned up, then it dawned on me where I was.

I know there's a load of padding coming up, so hopefully that doesn't sour things.

Currently under one of the plates turning off the big sun lamps.

I could easily sit and play this all day. Stupid sexy work :x

Is there any way to make the other characters fight more aggressively when you're not controlling them? I find they'll kid of just do the odd hit and not really contribute much unless I'm constantly switching to force them to do their main attacks.

Not really.

I think it's designed so that you are encouraged to switch between them to build up their ATB meters rather than just sticking mostly with one character and firing off special attacks with the menu.

The combat, once it clicks, is glorious in this.

Need to get back to my replay I think.

Yeah switching manually between characters is pretty much a core part of the combat experience, although I did tend to have a "main" that I stuck with as my primary combat character (Tifa  )

You can issue instructions to other characters using one of the shoulder buttons I think? But generally I found it easier just to jump straight in and take control of them

Ah ok thanks. I'd found the L2 R2 instructions, but I really noticed they just kind of sit there in the last few fights. I realised I'd not learned their weapon abilities like I had with cloud, so I was concentrating on getting those as I know I'll regret not having them available later on.

WHAT A BUNCH OF JOKERS!

Nope, you're meant to keep switching to build up their bars.

The combat system is designed around it. Otherwise it would just be a 3rd person action game.

Basic attacks to build up ATB > fire off ability > switch to next character > repeat

Enemies are also more likely to target the character you are controlling aonit can be a good way to kite them.

To be fair, this is the first main bit where I've had 3 characters on the go for any length of time, so I'm used to just using cloud mainly on his own.

Yeah that's fair enough.

I think it does a good job of easing you into things

This clip is an example of how good things feel once it clicks

Just stick it on easy and play as Tifa. Makes it all way better, she’s just great.

Just had the sector 7 plate fall, but still feels like I've got a decent chunk of the Game left to go.

Nice, thanks. I think I'm on about 25 hours now.

You've still got the worst filler bit to go  it really killed the pacing for me but hopefully since you know it's coming you won't get all amped up for the ending.

I've just had another load of pointless side quests thrown my way, which ive cleared (all but the corneo treasures). Find fast travel chocobo, juke box shite, that sort of thing.

Please tell me that's the padding you mean, because I could realy do with a nice hype end to the game now.

Yeah, that sounds like the worst padding section

Very strange timing with it too, coming straight off the back of a big fight section. Hey, now find some music to make people dance!

I gave up chasing anything optional toward the back half of the game, did nothing but reduce the enjoyment of the experience in my opinion. It's a fantastic game but they really strawberry floated up the pacing at times. To be fair they were always going to struggle to expand the Midgar section into an entire games worth of content - it's such a tight sequence in the original game

Yeah I'm tempted to not bother now if there's any more. The opening section of the game was strawberry floating amazing with nostalgia through the roof, but using the slums as a padding rat run has diluted the game at this point.

I completed everything (and wish I'd taken your approach for the same reasons as you) and I honestly think they could have cut all the side quests and the game wouldn't have lost anything. I think my time was around the 35 hour mark and if it they'd cut the padding and it had come in at 20-25 hours I think it would have been all the better for it. And 25 hours is more than acceptable in terms of game length.

Or if they did want side quests in they should have made them most interesting!
