Is XV with the boy band road trip a good game for a newcomer to try?

I actually loved it and think it's a good starting point. The combat is similar enough to FF7 Remake and the 'road trip' aspect is something unique to games in general, not just a series. I think the story and gameplay loses its way towards the end and is very linear, but the open world for the first half of the game is terrific. Plus, there's a Venice-style city later on that is jaw-dropping.

The first installment centers solely on the city of Midgar, which takes up, by some estimates, a little more than the first quarter of the original game’s first of three discs.

Is this true  they'll never finish it at that rate

The estimate is off, disc two begins the fourth and final act of the story.

That would put it about 4 episodes total.

Nah. In the first disc you've got

Midgar
Kalm (and Flash Backs)
Junon (and Journey to)
Mount Coral (and Journey to - just assume I say this everytime)
Golden Saucer/Prison
Nibelhiem
Cosmo Canyon
Rocket Town
Temple of Ancinets
The Last City

And that ignores any side stuff like Pheonix Mountain, Wungo etc

Disc 2 is comparable IIRC and Disc 3 is "your at endgame, you can still explore the world, but most story events are done)

Seconded. I really enjoyed FFXV because it gives you the open world at the start when you don't really care about the story rather than just prior to the final dungeon when you really want to see the end. As the game goes on it gets a little bit less open so that by the time you're on the final chapter (you'll know when) you've already done all the sidequests and you're ready to see the story through to the end. The battle system is also really good and there is some sound logic on why your characters can use magic etc. The lack of any fanservice boobs characters in the main party also means its a lot less cringeworthy than most other JRPG's (I gave up on Xenoblade 2 for this reason) and a good FF to introduce your kids to if thats your thing.

My only concern was how Square needed to release a 2-hour movie on Blu-ray as a prologue to the game, had a great cast with the likes of Aaron Paul, Sean Bean and Lena Headey but fail to carry them over to the main game.

It's also either £5 secondhand or free on game pass so worth your time.

Haven't downloaded this yet...my user name is so irrelevant now haha.
Anyway I heard this is possibly the only game in the FFVII remake. Hopefully it's a new story with a solid ending based in Midgar and not an ending waiting for part 2 which will possibly never come out as they are not currently working on it.
Also I pronounce Mako as Mack Ko too as it is Japanese. Mayko would be the british way of saying something in Japanese. So to be fair they have pronounced it correctly as the producers intended.

Tried it last night and I really enjoyed it.

Is it just me that the classic mode seem pointless? I thought it would be a proper old turn based RPG but it wasn't?

Will give it another go tonight.

I tried it yesterday too.

The graphics were great, the setting and atmosphere was just as i had hoped, but the battle system was a mess.

I chose 'classic' on the assumption it would mean a return to turn based combat, but it wasn't. As a result i found the boss battle to be a confusing mash of attacking with an occasional spell, and i was left massively disappointed by it.

I probably won't be buying.

Apparently you don't have to attack or defend manually in classic mode as they will be doing themselves except you can command them what to do like ATB, Limit and etc.

It was fairly easy and boring I may add. You should give it a go and see how it works properly.

Played this tonight. Lasts just shy of an hour.

Opted for Normal difficulty. Now considering the last time I played one of these things was back in 2002 (FF X) I didn’t have any issues with defeating the boss at all (it does overstay its welcome mind you by a good 5 minutes). Now, I’d forgotten how to block by this point, but otherwise the editor from Kotaku is talking out of his arse.

I don’t want to commit but I may buy it on PS5, even though it does look bloody brilliant on the Pro now.

The battle system is a far cry from a mess. You actually have to think about what you're doing.

I've downloaded this but haven't played it yet. The custom theme alone though brought back so many memories with the soundtrack and sound effects.

I’m unsure on this. Loved it on so many levels but the combat just isn’t clicking for me. I breezed through but it felt all flashy and a bit drawn out, especially the boss fight. I think my biggest gripe is the episodic nature. FF7 is my favourite game so I don’t want to be stuck waiting years between each one with the risk of it never being finished. And the question of how progress will carry over? I don’t want to grind episode one to find I start at a preset level on episode 2, but then if not people will power grind in the long wait between episodes and ruin the difficulty.

I played the demo today and it's really enjoyable. Will wait for reviews as I'm torn between this and Nioh 2.

Wish my image sig would work

Finally got around to playing this. It looks stunning, and the music is brilliant too. Brought back so many memories. Gameplay-wise, I quite liked it. I thought the combat was fine, and the while the boss dragged on slightly, it wasn't anything too bad. It really dawned on me what an undertaking it is though to remake the game in this level of detail and with the production values so high. I hope they pull it off and get everything done that they want to. I'm reluctant to buy each instalment for £60 or whatever it is - think I'd rather wait and buy them all once they've been released - but I'll see how things pan out. The nostalgia though.

Just pre ordered this - Should I get the demo now too? Or hold out for the month?

I'd hold out, personally. The opening hour is good, but it isn't something I'd really want to play twice (particularly the boss fight).

Is anyone doing an official strategy guide for this by any chance? If ever there was a game that required a guide book and something to really delve into, FFVII would be it. Even the remaining gaming magazines don’t do them any more, as time consuming as they no doubt are. We need the return of PowerStation and PlayStation Solutions!

Replayed the demo tonight, love everything about it except the combat which I'm becoming increasingly concerned about. Really hoping it reveals itself to be much better when the final game starts to show more about it
