I really enjoyed the demo. :toot: Genuinely considering playing through it again, which is a good sign.

Barret's voice though...

Yeah that was pretty awesome.

Day one.

Pleasantly surpassed my expectations. The combat has great potential, I can't wait to see it really tested later on in the game.

I'd be surprised that games journalists can't read, but at the same time it's pretty par for the course.

I do love how it's history repeating. Back in 1997 nobody knew how to play Final Fantasy VII either, leading it to be one of the most returned games in the history of Electronics Boutique.

I never played the original, read this in a review:

The first installment centers solely on the city of Midgar, which takes up, by some estimates, a little more than the first quarter of the original game’s first of three discs.

Is this true  they'll never finish it at that rate

It's the one thing I'm still hesitant about with this.

How many times am I going to be expected to fork out a decent chunk of change to get the full game?

3 is probably the sweet spot for me, but any more than that and I'm happy to walk away.

Wait for the completed PS5 and Xbox Series X Deluxe Ultimate Definitive Director's Cut version in 2024.

Midgar probably took about 6 hours or so in the original game for a first time player. I think the game probably took about 40hrs on average so yeah it's a very small chunk of the game

So is there an expectation this will only last 5-10 hours?

Some estimates have said it could last 50 hours. I've no idea how as I personally haven't seen anything suggesting they've added huge new areas to explore or loads of extra story material.

If only the game taught you how to play it before fighting the boss and gave you lots of time to practice

Yeah it's by no means a tiny section of the game but there is still a concern that it's going to take them a long time (and a large number of "episodes") to get through everything. Especially as whole new systems of the game still appear after Midgar so it's not like this first chapter gives them the basis for everything.

I think there is plenty of scope to expand the Midgar section into something more elaborate than in the original game, it would be easy enough to bulk out the content so this first game is pretty large. Even this demo section already includes more content than the original opening.

I really enjoyed the demo, just seeing the world and hearing that music in glorious detail was awesome. Not entirely sold on the battle system yet but these things take time to bed in so I'm confident it will come into its own. Some of the voice acting is bloody annoying, especially Barrett. Hate how they say some of the terminology as well - "Mack-o" instead of "May-ko" etc. That's not how I've been saying it in my head for 23 years!

I only played the first 5 or 10 minutes of the demo is I'll almost certainly be getting the game anyway, but agree on Barret's voice being very annoying.

Is that seriously how they say Mako as well? I've always pronounced it the same way as you so that's going to be off-putting

The estimate is off, disc two begins the fourth and final act of the story.

That would put it about 4 episodes total.

Yeah Disc 3 really doesn’t have much to it

Wow, that was unreal. So good. Never played FF7 before and I’m there’s for day 1 for this now. The visuals the music the style all absolutely stunning. Presentation wise it looks next gen.

I do have some sympathy with the complaints of being overwhelmed. That boss fight was a bit much to take in so soon. The controls feel a little wonky, like I can never look quite where I want to and I dont think I understood the blocking at all. Still got through it in the end and can see it feeling really satisfying once everything clicks, which FF15 never did for me.

Blown away!

Maybe I need to get to grips with the combat system more but this is a bit...eh. The presentation and music especially is, of course, incredible, but it just feels a bit soulless. Maybe if I hadn't pumped hundreds of hours into the original I wouldn't be saying this...

As someone who's never played a FF game, I feel like I need to give this a go. Although I'm more than happy to wait for a next-gen edition, once it's all been released, if I end up liking it.

Is XV with the boy band road trip a good game for a newcomer to try?

Its a whole lot of "meh" in my opinion. A weird game, where they give you barely any story as to what's going on and expect you to dip into a load of other media to "get it". Or maybe I'm just a moron. I've been playing for about 2 and a half years so far and have no inclination to finish it.

X is probably a better place to start, or just wait till next month for VII.
