I think it looks great. I don't think I'll get it on release but I'm going to be tempted.

Yes, because it was one. ;)

Like I say I think some aspects of what they are doing here look good - that Garrus model/texturing looks like a nice improvement for example, I just think that some elements of the changes they have shown actually reduce the visual impact of the scenes on display.

Hard to know for sure until the full game is out of course.

It still is.

Surprised to see so much praise from this trailer. Thought it looked utter dogshit, with the new lighting effects straight up ruining the atmosphere of some places and some utterly bizarre changes being made like them shrink-wrapping Liara's tits so they look bigger.

I'm sorry but what atmosphere? Most of the scenes you're talking about are meant to be on a futuristic spaceship or space station. I don't see how candle lit lighting reflects that kind of atmosphere at all.

They made the lighting really dark at the time to hide the game's technical shortcomings, now they don't have to.

I...think you're misinterpreting the word atmosphere. It doesn't mean "moody". A clinical spaceship with clean lines and hard colours is still an atmosphere. What I'm saying is that, from that trailer, the atmosphere of the first game especially has been altered, in my opinion for the worse

Look at the MAKO footage in the snow. In the original the storm effects are much stronger, with the distant parts of the level appearing slowly out of the storm like ghosts emerging from the shadows.

New version: you can see everything. The snow effects are reduced. It looks far less dramatic.

It's like getting rid of the fog in Silent Hill. Was it originally there because of technical limitations? Yes. Was that its only contibution to the game? No.

Astute observations and well explained. I watched the trailer yesterday and was thinking I'm not sure this new clip is better than that old clip. The game obviously has had its visuals improved with new textures and higher resolutions so it seems BioWare wanted to highlight this to gamers to demonstrate how much the Legendary Edition is improved not realising they were changing the artistic direction of it. Colour correction can change a film from looking like a home video to looking like an epic movie.

The first clip of femShep on the Citadel in the original has richer, darker colours. At the 20 sec mark she and her crew in the original have shadows across their face that accentuates a sense of emotional intensity, the new version just looks really well-lit. The Mako outdoors too, it's like the whole palette has been made less blue and more white with a higher light source rather than side on. Mass Effect's story is that the very existence of the universe is under threat and that is a shadow overhanging everything both metaphorically and literally.

Saying that, Liara's new costume looks great. I will wait to buy this later in the year and I'm looking forward to replaying Mass Effect 1 which I remember it as a quality RPG and love how the story is slowly revealed.

I too found it odd that they chose to showcase this in the trailer. It was like, "interface changes, lighting effects, textures, model geometry, BIGGER BOOBS!"

Sure but the mako also glows like it's radioactive in the original version, it goes through dark areas and is barely affected by the lighting, so there's pros and cons.

Plus if you look at most of the character close ups (Thane, Garus, Tali specifically) the lighting is basically identical

Cool. But I think it looks worse overall and the overriding point of the remaster seems to have been "let's do stuff to it we can put on the back of the box" rather than "let's transfer the atmosphere and feel of this game onto new tech".

Compare the Halo CE remaster to Shadow of the Colossus' for example.

This reminds me of the Demon Souls remake when people didn't like it because the game didn't look identical.

This has a similar look to some of those high end, GPU melting graphics mods for GTA. Pretty and a technical achievement but a bit soulless compared to the original.

Mass Effect 1 was a nightmare to play with an average of 20fps on 360 so a 60fps remaster? yes please.

Difference was, that was a full remake whereas this is a remaster only. Bluepoint reimagined the entirety of Demon Souls and obviously took some liberties, but they retained the majority of the feeling of the original (as they did with SoTC) so that only the hardcore really had complaints. This is a remake though, so to change the atmosphere so totally while working with the old frameworks is a much starker difference.

The snippet on Noveria couldn't illustrate the change in atmosphere more if it tried!

They've used the ME3 variant of the 'scientist' uniform for Liara there so I'm guessing everyone who wears that outfit in the first game will be altered also i.e. Chakwas probably also has enlarged baps.

On first glance, I thought the original Peak 15 trek on Noveria looked better too but honestly, I've finished ME1 so many times that seeing it in any new light at all will be interesting purely for the novelty. I think the remaster looks good overall, and found it interesting how Feros appears more in line with the original art now. I wonder if they intentionally went back to the concepts for some of these locations.

I'm the one who grasped the meaning of "atmosphere" on the first try so let's not bandy about insults, eh?
