I started with default male, then scrapped it due to his weird eyes, tried default female, scrapped it due to the strawberry floated up mouth (and general ghoulish “Hollywood actress with too much work done” look), took a brief look at the custom males and they were all garbage Bethesda-level models, so went back to default male.

I’m still only on Eden Prime so I might try again with the character creator. That one of Fade’s doesn’t look half bad.

Don't be fooled, she only looks good in that shot because of the lighting, she usually looks like this

Well, here’s what I went for in the end.

I'm playing on insanity and it was pretty manageable. Just got to Liara's digsite and there's these Geth Gecko things just climb everywhere and gooseberry fool finally hit the fan.

Can't help but feel like a game is slightly poorly balanced if your reliance on succeeding is tied to the luck of the AI.

Because if every enemy just decided to charge right towards me there would be nothing I could do.

Also sometimes the squad just stand out in the open and get absolutely obliterated in about 2 seconds. I even have Wrex built as a tank and he still gets pooped on

Those gecko Geth are strawberry floating horrible, just did the bit yesterday and they move fast as gooseberry fool just jumping around everywhere. It's the only bit I've died at so far.

The fight at the end of that level with the Krogan used to be pretty brutal in the original but apparently they've balanced it more now.

It's just a perfect example of why I hate how heavy the numbers game is in the first game.

If one of the geth soldiers decides to rush my position I'm dead, absolutely nothing so can do about it.

I'm assuming there's a new game plus and insanity is intended more for that?

Because I'm not having fun rolling the AI dice every time this encounter begins. It's complete RNG, both with team mates and enemies. Nothing is consistent other than the big Geth tank thing at the back.

Play on a lower difficulty. You will likely find it way more enjoyable.

Btw this doesn’t launch if you have your Xbox Wireless headset on… you have to switch off turn launch the game and after you select which game you are playing you can turn back on

My first time diving into Mass Effect, it’s not wowing me so far I must admit. It’s solid enough but the really don’t do a great job of teaching you a lot especially the screen with al, the stats and stuff. The shooting also feels weird, you don’t seem to get no feedback from the enemy that they are taking damage until they just drop which is annoying.

I’ll stick with it this week and put more time into it and see if my feelings change.

This is very much an ME1 IIRC.

It was much more of an RPG with KOTOR style combat. They've back-pasted combat controllers much more like ME2/3 where it was an Action focused RPG, but it does lead to some odd feeling stuff.

I got all but one very quickly. The Wrex/Garrus/Tali stuff is insane. "I just met you, but..."

It only just occurred to me how the Asari are essentially Non-binary

I mean I know they're all referered to as female but Liara literally says "My species is mono-gendered, male and female have no real meaning for us"

I really don't understand how some people can say ME1 is the best game, some of the missions are appalling, they feel like something from a PS1 game. I don't remember the ME2 missions being particularly different mechanically but the way they are presented feels a lot more natural and way less transparently videogamey

Also the way you meet some of the characters doesn't feel very involved, in ME2 their re-introductions are so unique and full of flavour. In ME1 it's just kind of weirdly rushed and nobody other than Liara is properly fleshed out when you meet them.

Don't get me wrong, enjoying the game but anyone who thinks 1 is better than 2 is just wrong :dread:

1 has the worst gameplay, worst environments, worst cutscenes (the strawberry floating Benezia stuff was like something from a B movie ).

What exactly does it do better than the other games? The Dialogue is well written but the jankiness of the rest of the game tends to undo a lot of the positive world building. It's not a very cohesive game in terms of production values.

Mass Effect 1 has the best story. That's it. 2 is better in every conceivable way beyond that. Same with 3.

2>3>1

1 is still the best. It has the most effective world-building, the best narrative arc, crunchy RPG gameplay (which was an acquired taste, and has apparently been toned down now?) and is, not to be contrarian, the most cohesive.

2 and 3 suffer from actionification: everything is louder, more epic, more bluntly expressed. They lack the finesse of 1 and suffer for it.

1 was always my favourite as well. It felt genuinely epic.

Mass Effect 1 is Star Trek: First Contact

2 and 3 are the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
