I think it may be more, KK. With the new model of PS5 priced at £480 (which feels high after the recent £400-ish sale pricing of the older model) and the Pro seemingly being quite a lot more powerful, I could see the price being around £650.

I suspect that the console chassis design will be substantially different, too - rather than mirroring the slim and original design, I wonder if it'll have a more "boxy", square appearance.

I assume it will have a detachable disk drive.
I still think it would be nice if we could buy old fashioned hardware upgrade kits for the PS5 so we could just buy that rather than a whole new machine but that seems like wishful thinking.

That's a good point, Peter. I had thought that the Pro would be a different design to the slim model but I'd guess that they wouldn't want to have two versions of the disc drive on the market. So... maybe the Pro design could be similar (but bigger?) to the slim, so that it can use the same disc unit?

It also makes sence from a marketing point as well as they can show the same basic design as a family of systems.

What would be the aproximate limit Sony could manage with todays PC tech and a realistic budget for a console?
Obviously they could just bung a 4090 in a box that looks like a PS5 and call it a day and decide to suicide the company with losses as it will be the most expensive console of all time but I have a feeling they won't do that.
I'd be happy with 1.5x increase in power but with much better AI image enhancement or whatever that stuff is called.

It's still doing 4k so doesn't need the most bleeding edge stuff.

There are rumours that it'll output 8K... which seems pretty pointless? Far better (IMHO) to go for 4K at 60/120 rather than 8K at 28 or whatever.

Sony still put that 8K logo on the PS5 box  :fp: .

I've a feeling it will be their weapon against the Switch 2 which we all assume can play PS4-level games on the go.

8K is pointless and will only result in piss poor gaming performance.
I've watched a few videos of Linus building 8k capable gaming PCs and they cost a stupid amount just to get games running at 60fps and medium settings at 8k so there's no hope of a console having that sort of horsepower until a full next gen and I doubt it'll be worth the performance hit even then.

4K is more than good enough and with decent HDR it can look strawberry floating amazing.

I think there's also a possibility that 8K may be banned on power usage concerns anyway so that would make it all kinds of pointless.

I finally got a 4k OLED this year and I can't see myself upgrading until it breaks and I don't think I need more than 4K.

Are even films being made in 8K?
I know that some of the Japan Olympics were filmed in 8K as a test and to make the footage futureproof but if even big budget films aren't bothering then TV certainly won't.

I'm looking forward to the Digital Foundry comparisons even if I don't buy the new consoles.
UE5 looks like it could be quite a decent testbed for the extra power.

Push Square wrote:(Jeff) Grubb comments that the recent PS5 Pro specs leak is "almost certainly real", and is targeting a release in September 2024. The other key thing he talks about is the PS5 Pro's main new feature, said to be Sony's own version of Nvidia's DLSS technology. Essentially, this would use machine learning for super-sampling images, resulting in enhanced resolutions and frame rates, better ray tracing, and so on.

Possibly September for the retail launch of the Pro; and another mention of picture enhancement.

I think psvr2 will get the most benefit.

Rumours persist that a Pro will arrive later this year; this time on the basis that "Sony will want new hardware available for the release of GTA 6 in early 2025".

Serkan Toto of Tokyo-based consultancy firm Kantan Games wrote:There seems to be a broad consensus in the game industry that Sony is indeed preparing a launch of a PS5 Pro in the second half of 2024.

If new hardware is going down the 8K route rather than the 60fps@4K option (ie performance and resolution mode combined*) then they are insane. No one is asking for 8K graphics on a TV that they sit 6ft from.

I acknowledge that with each hardware iteration the goalposts shift, and something with fancier ray tracing will replace the 30fps void that is left.

Proper raytracing @ 60FPS would also be acceptable. Even if it means 1080 - 1440p resolution.

Yeah, I'd imagine that the focus would be on improved performance at 4K 60 FPS rather than looking for an 8K 10 FPS or something. At least, I hope so!

I quite like the idea of a Pro model. I'm obvs not crazy about the expenditure (if the core model is around £470 then I expect the Pro to be at least £599 :dread: ) but I very much enjoyed - and am still enjoying - the PS4 Pro system.

Yeah I can’t see this being cheaper than £599, this will be marketed towards tech enthusiasts for sure.

Nothing is pushing the current model ffs :fp:

But hey, call it pro and bundle it with GTA6 and watch everyone 'double dip'.

UE5 is not pushing a lot on 4090's at the moment plus it has constant stutter according to DF so I've no idea why you think a less powerful console would fair any better.

All seems a bit silly and willy-waving at this point in the PS5's life cycle. I wasn't interested in the PS4 Pro and likely won't be interested in this.
