This one's gaining some real traction over at ResetEra

Rumour: Nikkei Suggests Smaller And More Affordable Switch Hardware Is On The Way

Japanese publication Nikkei is now reporting Nintendo is planning to release a smaller and more affordable version of its successful Switch hardware. Although Nintendo refused to comment, Nikkei stated the system could arrive as early as this year, according to system suppliers. A separate source said the aim is to focus on portable play while omitting certain functions to reduce the overall cost of the unit.

In the final section of the report there is reportedly information regarding a new online service launching in 2019 that will be more expensive than the existing one. Nintendo Life’s very own Steve Bowling said the translation of the Nikkei article actually indicates Nintendo Switch Online will be “strengthened” with new services targeting the system's core audience.

As a Switch owner I have zero interest in this console.

I was hoping for an upgraded Switch not a cut down version that will more than likely end up being more expensive when you end up inevitably buying the Joycons and dock.

I'd be interested in this save for the fact that it'll be overpriced and remain so indefinitely. It's that exact reason why I've not bothered with Switch.

I think this could prove to be really popular, I think there's a core audience of handheld DS/3DS players who aren't happy with the current Switch model for several reasons

- Current model is too large
- Currend model can't be folded to protect screen
- Dock is an unnecessary expense
- Joycons are an unnecessary expense

I understand that the current USP of the Switch is being able to Switch between handheld and docked, and be able to remove the joycons, but I think there's a huge audience out there who don't want those things and are currently holding off.

Rumour has it that's coming late 2020 to coincide with the launch of PS5/Xbox Two.

I kinda like the portability of the Switch Mini - the 3DS remains my "traveling" gaming format rather than the Switch - but personally I'd be more interested in a "more powerful" Switch than a mini version.

But... if Nintendo were to allow additional logon / downloading then I quite like the idea of using the Mini whilst outside the home, and then continuing the gameplay on my original Switch at home.

Cost is the all important factor here, anecdotal evidence suggests that take up has been slow amongst parts of the DS/3DS audience, namely parents buying it for kids. If they can get the cost low enough and the build quality high enough we could say a real surge in uptake amongst that crowd. The real success of the DS and 3DS was households having more than one, each kid wanted their own device, if they cane replicate this with the Switch it will be a big deal.

Also available in colours other than grey would be neat

My girlfriend isn't a fan of the Switch but loves her New 2DS XL

Her main complaint is that the Switch is too big, too expensive, won't fit in her handbag and the screen would scratch without being in a sleeve.

Not even the prospect of her beloved Animal Crossing coming to Switch will convince her.

Launching the Switch equivalent of this monstrosity alongside Pokemon Sword & Shield would be a licence to print money.

The vast majority of special edition designs look bad. Just give me some straight up block colours to choose from and I'll be happy.

So it's a WiiU with a Switch built inside? Not sure if want.

No, it'd be a GBA/DS/3DS that plays Switch games, a true handheld.

The Wii U requires both tablet and console to work.

I think it looks bad

I hate how every Zelda edition seems to be gold embellished. Gold on pretty much anything that isn't jewellery is just tacky.
