Sainsbo's stop selling fireworks - time to ban them entirely for home use?

Last year, a petition to ban the public sale of fireworks to protect animals, children and people with a phobia attracted more than 300,000 signatures.

Pet-owners welcomed Sainsbo's decision with many tweeting that other supermarkets should follow suit.

A spokeswoman for Sainsbo's declined to detail why the supermarket will no longer sell fireworks, stating that it was commercially sensitive.

Tezzies and Azzers, babes said they would continue to sell fireworks.

Catherine Shuttleworth, chief executive and founder of Savvy Marketing, also said that selling fireworks was "a really expensive way of doing retail in supermarkets".

She said: "When you go and buy your fireworks, obviously they are not on a shelf anywhere in the store. They tend to be in a glass cabinet that's locked up and a member of staff has to go and unlock that cabinet every single time you want to buy fireworks."

She also said the customer's age has to be checked because it is illegal to sell fireworks to anyone under 16. In addition, the supermarket cannot send back any unsold products to the distributor, "and they are quite dangerous to keep in the back of shops, which are busy places".

A petition last year calling for a ban, which gained 307,897 signatures, said that fireworks "injure thousands of people every year" and "cause damage to buildings, vehicles, [and] emergency vehicles".

In response, the government said it "takes the issue of safety of fireworks very seriously. Legislation is in place to control their sale, use and misuse. We have no plans to change legislation".

One healthcare professional said on Twitter: "Just came here to say a huge thank you and praise to Sainsies for the decision to not sell fireworks this year. It is not just the animals who suffer but anyone who is unwell or has a condition like autism."

Scottish National Party MP Alison Thewliss tweeted: "Really pleased to see Sainer's have taken the responsible decision to stop selling fireworks. I hope other retailers follow suit."

A recent consultation in Scotland over the sale of fireworks to the public found that there was support for tougher controls on the selling and use of the products.

Of the 16,000 people who responded, 94% wanted tighter controls on the sale of fireworks and 87% supported an outright ban on the sale of fireworks.

Nobody in my family has bought fireworks since the mid '90s. Really expensive and nowhere near as good as an actual firework display. Really annoying when MORONS let them off in daylight as well.

I remember my Dad came home with a load of fireworks from France once - they were unbelievably loud.

Absolutely fireworks should be limited to public displays.

There's a monumentally stupid family on our road who strawberry floating love fireworks, will set them off at any holiday, and do dumb gooseberry fool like set them off in their front garden, when there are cars parked meters away and driving by, and once setting them down in the middle of the road.

Doing my own fireworks displays this year. It will be every evening 2 weeks before bombfire night and 2 weeks after.

It sounds sensible that handling gunpowder rockets should require a licence, and the local council informed of any display.

Not sure how fireworks will work with the drone delivery future either. Can't see Amazon delivering many parcels by air on the night of 5 November...

I feel like Stool Bloke has got to be the sort to hold his own display, wouldn't want that option being removed from us!

I used to love home displays back when I was a kid - going round our Nan's house with aunts, uncles and cousins all there was a fun time. We used to do all sorts of gooseberry fool you couldn't get away with now - throwing sparklers into trees, filling a biscuit tin full of bangers and watching the lid explode off etc. :slol:

But the reality is none of that stuff was safe, and it was gooseberry fool compared to a real display so I'm all for banning the sale of these for home use. Last year we had strawberry floating idiot kids letting off fireworks in the middle of our street - absolutely strawberry floating wrecked someone else's car and could have done far worse if they weren't so lucky. :dread:

Supermarket fireworks are crap and overpriced anyway. Go to a proper firework store and get much better for less.

We have fireworks at my wifes's family home every year on bonfire night and have done for the last 20 years. The children love it.

Just ban fire entirely.

I’m glad that you have a good time and are safe, but 4,500 people were hospitalised due to fireworks injuries at this time of the year in 2017 and despite numerous public safety campaigns the number has risen year on year since 2010. I don’t think that the genuine safety concerns and medical health warnings that appear every year constitute a nanny state, not when it comes to handling explosives safely.

I'm sure you're both responsible and safe, but evidently not everyone is. Thousands of people are injured every year from fireworks, so practical steps to reduce those numbers without impacting the enjoyment of those who want to hold a safe display seems quite sensible to me. Would you object to obtaining a licence for example? I believe something similiar is already done in NI.

I'd also add that fireworks can be a nightmare for pet owners.

Why would you pay a fuckton of money for a shitter version of something you can get for free done at least twenty times better at literally any park.

What's the last damningly nanny state measure that leads you to think we're on a fast moving train to Recluse City?

I don't necessarily agree with a total ban on them, but they should be far more controlled than they currently are. They certainly shouldn't be something you can pick up on a whim with your weekly shop.
