I agree with this. Some kind of permit or license required with criminal checks maybe. And some way of stopping people who have misused them and injured people previously buying them again.

I don’t know how feasible that is but I’ve always thought it’s a bit ridiculous they’re allowed to be on general sale to anyone.

I’m glad that you have a good time and are safe, but 4,500 people were hospitalised due to fireworks injuries at this time of the year in 2017 and despite numerous public safety campaigns the number has risen year on year since 2010. I don’t think that the genuine safety concerns and medical health warnings that appear every year constitute a nanny state, not when it comes to handling explosives safely.

I wonder how many of those 4,500 injuries were caused by people using fireworks as intended.

I agree that fireworks are dangerous in the wrong hands and probably shouldn't be sold in supermarkets but I also think that people should still have the option of buying them if they want.

Let's be honest, the real reason ol' Mr J. has dropped these from sale is that very few of their customers were probably purchasing them anyway and it was no longer commercially viable when that floor space could be used for something else. In my local it sat near the entrance (beside the security guard) instead of FIFA and the latest BluRay/DVD releases.

In my experience, ASDA is the supermarket that GOES LARGE on fireworks and Halloween.

That sounds like a lovely day, really does, and if it’s a tradition for you then power to you.

But paying loads of money to do something that’s provided better for free is still a bit of a mugs game. Like I say, in your case it’s part and parcel of a bigger tradition and that’s grand, but it doesn’t change that proper public displays are better than private ones given the legal limitations.

I quite like buying some fireworks and setting them off. I actually think it's more fun than actually watching them blow up.

I don't think they should be banned. I could see some kind of basic training being a good idea. Like if you paid £10 to do a test after a couple of hours instruction, got a licence and then if you were an idiot or just anti social it could be taken away.

10 years or so ago I wouldn’t have agreed with a ban on home fireworks. But I’ve matured since then and they are nothing but a menace. Ban them everywhere except licenced displays. If that means we live in a “nanny state” then so be it, it’s better than having to listen to chavs firing rockets all night or children/pets getting injured when some banana splits throws a firework at them.

I would be OK with them being banned. I find them annoying and a waste of time.

People should be allowed to buy what they like so long as what they're buying isn't illegal, but as with other potentially dangerous things they should be more strictly regulated/offered, and probably not in supermarkets.
