Didn't realise there was doubt about that. Article I read said he'd been stabbed in quite a few places.

I was referring more to the thread title still saying he "has likely been stabbed".

BBC News wrote:As news emerged of Friday's attack, eyes turned to Tehran where the fatwa - religious edict - calling for the writer's assassination was first issued more than three decades ago.

But on Monday, Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani - giving the country's first official reaction - said Tehran "categorically" denied any link, adding "no-one has the right to accuse the Islamic Republic of Iran".

However, he said freedom of speech did not justify Mr Rushdie insulting religion in his writing.

"In this attack, we do not consider anyone other than Salman Rushdie and his supporters worthy of blame and even condemnation," the spokesman said during his weekly press conference in Tehran.

"By insulting the sacred matters of Islam and crossing the red lines of more than 1.5 billion Muslims and all followers of the divine religions, Salman Rushdie has exposed himself to the anger and rage of the people."

What would you expect from a terrorist state?

Some charming quotes here too: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/8/1 ... die-attack

'The hardline Kayhan newspaper, whose editor-in-chief is appointed by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, wrote, “A thousand bravos … to the brave and dutiful person who attacked the apostate and evil Salman Rushdie in New York. The hand of the man who tore the neck of God’s enemy must be kissed.”'

'At newsstands on Saturday, front-page headlines offered their own takes on the attack. The hardline Vatan-e Emrouz’s main story covered what it described as, “A knife in the neck of Salman Rushdie.” The reformist newspaper Etemad’s headline asked: “Salman Rushdie in neighbourhood of death?”'

Hundreds of authors to read from Salman Rushdie’s works in show of solidarity

The ‘Stand with Salman’ event in New York mirrors a public reading of The Satanic Verses that took place after the fatwa was issued in 1989

It's a little confusing that later on it states: PEN America said those gathering would “read from selected texts from Rushdie’s body of work”.

Reading anything other than The Satanic Verses wouldn't really be a particularly brave thing to do since none of his other books resulted in a fatwa being issued.
